Meijer hosted the 10th annual Meijer Mania event for returning Eastern Michigan University students. Privately hired tour buses picked students up at various points on campus and dropped them off at the south entrance of Meijer on Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti.
Students across the Eastern Michigan University campus were asked, “Do you know what Apple picking is?” The majority thought it had to do with physically picking apples off of a tree. The reality is, the term Apple picking has nothing to do with fall or fruit. Apple picking is the latest trend in thievery. According to ABCNews, this crime spree started spreading across the U.S. in the fall of 2012 and has only increased in frequency and intensity.
Much like the poem that sits at the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor, I am asking Eastern Michigan University to send me their tired, poor and hungry student masses. I am here to rescue you—if only to provide a guide to good eats around Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. I am Lorrie Mayzlin, a culinary arts and hospitality management student at neighboring Washtenaw Community College, set to transfer to EMU to finish a degree in restaurant management.
