The 2015 non-conference schedule has been set. Eastern Michigan University will open at home for the third straight season, hosting Old Dominion Sept. 5. This will be the second straight season the Eagles face the Monarchs, losing to them 17-3 last year on the road.
Two ordinances underwent a first reading at the Ypsilanti City Council meeting Tuesday evening. A public hearing has set the second readings to be on Feb. 17.
Eastern Michigan University received recognition for exceptional levels of community engagement with the Carnegie Foundation’s 2015 Community Engagement Classification, the foundation said in a statement Wednesday.

With barely a week of classes out of the way, returning students are still aglow from recent weeks of rest and relaxation. The Echo asked: “How did you spend your holiday break?”
Bryan Alfaro is feeling lucky to have found employment after graduate school. He obtained his master’s degree in written communication from Eastern Michigan University in August 2014 and began teaching for his alma mater’s English department.

Eastern Michigan University recently adopted a tobacco-free campus policy. The Board of Regents voted to pass this policy Friday afternoon at its winter regular meeting.
Eastern Michigan University Regents Francine Parker and Floyd Clack finished their last Board of Regents meeting Friday afternoon. Parker and Clack’s official terms will end Dec. 31, 2014.
Eastern Michigan University’s women’s swim and diving team left with a strong victory at the EMU invitational with 908 points. The swim and diving team beat out Mid-American Conference rival Bowling Green State University by 8 points.

EMU MESA Presents a Panel Discussion on Race: Making the Minority the Majority
Eastern Michigan University has received over $20 million in research grants in the last two years. The university has begun to invest significantly in research for several different departments around campus, including a $2 million Title III grant to encourage and promote STEM majors at Eastern.
Eastern Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety will be investing $17,000 in body cameras for police officers. The cameras will be used for officers “on foot patrol, bicycle patrol and other activity not occurring near or around a police vehicle.”
The Michigan House approved a pilot program that would allow for suspicion-based drug testing on welfare recipients, on Wednesday. The Echo asked students: “Do you agree with this bill? Why or why not?”
The Student Senate considered and unanimously passed Resolution 101-006 at its meeting Tuesday, a resolution passed by the Internal Affairs committee Nov. 24.
