As the Buzzcocks once sang, noise annoys. When it’s good, it annoys in a beautifully powerful way, one that you can latch onto regardless of whether you’re sad, angry or joyful.

EMU continued to celebrate Women’s History Month’s focus on celebrating women of character, courage and commitment with “The Woman Before Disney, Lotte Reiniger’s Dancing Shadows,” presented by professor Margrit Zinggeler of the German Department. Ypsilanti has long been regarded as living in the shadow of its frequently exalted neighbor, Ann Arbor. This made Thursday night’s Ypsi Lives, held in McKenny Hall’s lounge, extremely refreshing.
The event was tailor-made by Ypsilantians for Ypsilantians.

The daylight hours are getting longer by the minute, but it’s still cold enough to keep me in long sleeves and pants most days. In turn, I find myself thinking this is still the perfect weather for good, hot soup, or specifically, my mother’s excellent cabbage soup, swimming with winter vegetables and spicy flavors.

These two albums share a common theme: good rappers who have been disappointing me lately. Kool A.D.’s work with Das Racist showed that he was talented but, so far, his solo work has been underwhelming. Homeboy Sandman is a brilliant writer at his best, but his best hasn’t been showing lately. I still have faith in both of them, though, and at the rate that they release music, we’ll probably see plenty more of them this year.

I’m reviewing two electronic albums this week, though I’m not sure Mø’s album even fits that description. Despite its earworm single “XXX 88,” the rest of her repertoire shows a lot of different directions. Too many, in fact.

Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center would have looked more at home Saturday night if it were surrounded by rows of corn and wheat fields instead of standing vigil on the border of EMU’s campus. Four-wheel drive trucks, girls clad in short skirts and cowboy boots and more guys in flannel since Nirvana was touring descended upon it in droves for the Justin Moore concert.

St. Patrick’s Day tends to be a widely celebrated “mini holiday” regardless of whether or not you’re Irish, as is perfectly acceptable, since it is a saint’s feast day and not so much a national holiday. Intricate Celtic knots are a more beautiful, history-laden way to dip into Irish heritage than the usual beer and leprechauns.
