Despite rallying back from a 13-point halftime deficit and briefly taking the lead late in the second half, the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team fell short in a 90-87 loss to the University of Toledo on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Savage Arena.
The Eastern Michigan University Women’s Basketball team lost their second game of conference play and their sixth consecutive game overall to the Bowling Green Falcons by a score of 90-76. The team now stands at 1-11 overall and 0-2 in MAC play.

Rogers/Kilgore College/DePaul), take a bow.The senior starting forward had a career day in the MAC season opener against Northern Illinois, dropping 16 points apiece in both halves with multiple momentum-shifting dunks towards the end of the game and leading Eastern Michigan to a critical 75-71 victory over Northern Illinois at home to open conference play. “He’s [Nelson’s] the man out there,” head coach Stan Heath said. “He finds ways to get things done, and we needed him,” Heath added. Nelson’s 32 points were the most by an Eagle in nearly a calendar year, shooting a career-high 12/20 (60%) from the field and continuing his career-best streak of nine straight games with double-digit points. Elsewhere, Jalin Billingsley (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East Georgetown) and Christian Henry (Chicago, Illinois/The Skill Factory/Panola College) also contributed double-digit points to the Eagles’ 75-point total, Billingsley with 15 points on an efficient 5/7 (71.4%) shooting. At the same time, Henry tallied 13 on 5/10 (50%) from the floor. Eastern Michigan struggled shooting in the first half, only 11/29 (37.9%) from the floor and 2/12 (16.7%) behind the arc. However, the second half bore more fruitful results. The team turned in a 51.6% shooting percentage and held Northern Illinois to a 32% field goal percentage (8/25) on the defensive end. Twenty points off turnovers for the Eagles, compared to only eight for the Huskies, made the difference in the end. Eastern Michigan is powering onto a 7-6 record, now 1-0 in conference play, while Northern Illinois dropped to 4-9, 0-1 to open their MAC campaign. Next time out, the Eagles go back on the road. The rough start to the season continued for the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball team, dropping to 1-10 on the first day of 2025 with a 65-51 defeat at home to the hands of conference foe Western Michigan despite another stunning effort from rising Eagles star Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius). Eleko once again shined for the team, leading the way with a game-high 23 points and 15 rebounds for her eighth double-double in the first 11 games of the campaign. The junior leads the MAC (Mid-American Conference) in double-doubles thus far in 2024-25, along with being inside the top 10 for that stat nationally, and head coach Sahar Nusseibeh believes she still has room to improve and become even better. “She’s a heck of a player, and she knows that. She puts in a lot of work, so I’m proud of the work she puts in for her development,” Nusseibeh said. “I’m excited for her to go from operating at, you know, 85 percent to operating at 90 and eventually operating at 100 [percent]. Because once we see that girl at 100 [percent], there’s no one stopping her, and I do think it will contribute to some wins,” she added. Outside of Eleko, no other player on the Eagles contributed more than eight points.Elena Cabello (Malaga, Spain/IED Mediterraneo) matched her career high with that mark along with 10 rebounds, and Brooklyn Thrash (Wayne, Ohio/Elmwood/Canisius) posted that number as well; the team as a whole only shooting 35.1% from the floor (20/57) and 12.5% from behind the arc (2/16). Next time out Eastern Michigan will continue conference play on the road against Bowling Green, their first road MAC test of the year on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. Viewers can catch all the action live on ESPN+.
Another double-digit effort from Da'Sean Nelson (Toledo, Ohio/Robert S. The Eagles started slowly, trailing by 20 points less than 10 minutes into the first half and still behind by that same margin at halftime, but they gradually began to claw their way back into the game as the second half began. At one point, Eastern Michigan cut Davidson’s lead to 14 towards the latter portion of the second half - but the Wildcats finished the game strong, extending their advantage down the stretch up to their largest lead of the day (27) and ultimately finishing with a 22-point win. While Davidson reached a 10-3 mark, Eastern Michigan fell to 6-6. They finished December with a 1-4 record after their red-hot 5-2 start to the 2024-25 campaign.The aforementioned senior Nelson remains on a career run, having now posted eight straight games with double-digit points for the first time in his college tenure. At the same time, Arne Osojnik (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Dream City Christian) joined Nelson and Billingsley as the only players to reach double figures for the Eagles. Some unusual circumstances also occurred at the start of the game - a fire alarm causing a 20+ minute delay before the issue was rectified and play resumed. Eastern Michigan will return to action in precisely a week. They will tip off the new year by starting their conference play gauntlet at home against Northern Illinois on Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. Viewers can watch the action live on ESPN+.
Despite going on a 7-0 run to open the second half to cut the deficit to four points and a team-high 15 points coming from Olivia Westphal (Bethel Park, Pennsylvania/Bethel Park/Duquesne), the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball team dropped to 1-9 to open the 2024-25 campaign with an 81-65 loss to St. Thomas (MN) at home. The sharpshooter, Westphal, procured most of her buckets via three-pointers, shooting 4/9 from deep. At the same time, Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) continued her hot start to the season by posting another double-double, her seventh in 10 games thus far, with 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was another difficult day at home for the Eagles. Still, head coach Sahar Nusseibeh remains optimistic about her team’s ability to turn their season around, heading into conference play next week. “One thing I talked to our team within the huddle after the game is [that] winners are winners before they win. And I don’t feel like we act like winners consistently enough,” Nusseibeh said. “MAC season is a brand new season,” she added. Olivia Smith was the only other Eagles player to crack double figures points-wise, posting 10 points off the bench before fouling out down the stretch. At the same time, Mackenzie Amalia led the team in assists with seven dishes to her teammates.Eastern Michigan as a whole struggled to shoot the ball throughout the day, posting a 38% field goal percentage (23/61) from the floor and 24% (6/25) from deep. The Eagles never led at any point during the afternoon. Head coach Sahar Nusseibeh also gave a special shoutout to Elena Cabello, as while her numbers didn’t pop off the stat sheet with seven points and five rebounds off the bench, her effort did. “I thought Elena Cabello was tremendous, her effort, I’m really proud of her,” she said. I thought [Olivia] Westphal really stepped up and [Olivia] Smith stepped up; those have been great role players for us,” she added. The Eagles next return to action in 2025 - back at home facing off against Western Michigan to begin the MAC portion of their season on Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and can be listened to on WEMU (89.1 FM) along with The Varsity Network.
A career game from 6’8” senior Da'Sean Nelson (Toledo, Ohio/Robert S. Rogers/Kilgore College/DePaul), an additional 21 points from fellow upper-level student Jalen Terry (Flint, Michigan/Beecher/Oregon/DePaul), and a 15-2 run to erase an 11 point deficit to start the second half is all it took for Eastern Michigan’s men’s basketball team to snap their three-game losing streak - dramatically beating Wright State, 86-82. Nelson was the star of the show for the Eagles, not only posting a game and career-high 27 points but also adding in a career-high 13 rebounds, six of them critically on the offensive side of the ball, while also shooting an efficient 9/14 (64.3%) from the floor and 9/11 (81.8%) from the charity stripe. Eastern Michigan as a team got off to a hot start but ran out of steam towards the end of the first half, shooting only 32% from the floor and falling behind 38-27 at the break.However, a few crucial halftime adjustments by head coach Stan Heath were the catalyst that allowed the Eagles to avoid dropping their fourth straight and fire back quickly to open the second half. “I thought in the first half we were a little bit impatient, we were trying to do things a little bit in a hurry—but in the second half I thought our guys did a much better job,” Heath said.“A lot of our offense to start the second half to eliminate their 11 point lead was fueled from our defense,” he added. Jalen Terry’s aforementioned 21 points on an efficient 7/12 (58.3%) shooting from the floor, including hitting 6/10 (60%) shots from deep, also had a significant impact on the outcome - Terry and Nelson combining to score over half of the squad’s 86 points on the afternoon. The Eagles’ 59-point second-half explosion was the most they’ve had in a half in over half a decade. The team shot 21/33 (63.6%) from the floor to secure their first win of December and claw their way back above .500 with one game remaining before conference play begins in January.Eastern Michigan will return to action on December 28 at Davidson for their final non-conference showdown of the 2024-25 campaign. Tipoff is at 2 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
