2013 was an interesting year for movies, especially within the past couple of months when all of the films deemed Oscar-worthy were released. I’ve heard enough about “Gravity” and “12 Years a Slave” – we all know they’re both going to clean up at the Academy Awards. So here are my top films of 2013.

As far as the consensus goes, 2013’s album of the year seems to be a toss-up between Kanye West’s “Yeezus” and Vampire Weekend’s “Modern Vampires of the City.” A college dropout against a group of Ivy Leaguers. What a perfect way to sum up how delightfully strange 2013 was.

Winter isn’t the season most people get excited about. Snowy roads, going back to school (without the same fresh anticipation fall brings) and the end of the holidays can leave one feeling completely void of energy, unmotivated and very uncreative. The new Warner Brothers sports comedy, “Grudge Match”, opened in theaters on Dec. 25 and brought in about $7 million its opening week. Directed by Peter Segal and starring Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Kim Basinger and Kevin Hart, the chemistry between the legendary actors
alone certainly calls for high expectations.

My sweet tooth doesn’t stop at just solid foods. When I am feeling slightly parched in the wintertime, I like to snuggle up with a good book and sip on some warm, homemade apple cider. If I’m feeling a little more adventurous, I might even go for some non-alcoholic eggnog.

The amazing item that ends a good meal is dessert. I am a chocolate and peanut butter addict, and I have no problem admitting that.

For Eastern Michigan University alumnus and movie producer Wesley Coller, his passion for creating and appreciation for visual masterpieces on the big screen has led him to incredible opportunities.
Once a little kid from Pinckney, Mich., Coller had a boundless imagination. He loved art, the coming-of-age film “Stand By Me” and had “crazy, illusive dreams that was an impossibility.”

I came across my favorite holiday cooking gadget at a summer garage sale. It is a strange contraption, a sort of round aluminum tube with a twist-handle on one end and a series of metal disks with punched out shapes for the other end.

Christmas is less than a week away, so by now the idea of making a gift seems completely insane.
Fortunately, not all handmade gifts need to take weeks to make, or even days – one day and a few easy steps is all you need to make one-of-a-kind presents for family and friends.

Releasing an album in December nowadays almost guarantees an artist from being excluded from year-end lists, since the majority of publications publish their lists at the beginning of the month.
This year was especially hectic, with several notable albums coming out during the final month of the year, hopefully making publications question the logic of revealing their lists so early.

Exams are tough. High stress levels from difficult exams, lengthy review sessions and presentations to prepare mean students are running ragged. Eastern Michigan University’s Pre-Vet Club came up with a solution to help calm peoples’ nerves: the Puppy Room. The Pre-Vet Club brought puppies and dogs to EMU’s Science Complex on Dec. 16 to interact with students.

It’s a known fact that I love to eat, but I also have to eat before I eat. I have a grand affinity for appetizers – the more the merrier.

Flags were raised at half-mast across the country in honor of former South African President Nelson Mandela’s passing on Dec. 5, 2013, after years of health problems. The loss of Mandela, 95, was heartbreaking not only for his own country, but also for the world.
