Recently, two themes have defined Facebook “surfers’” daily views of information, especially those living in metro-Detroit: Detroit Tiger baseball and politics.

I voted for Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, in 2010. Should he decide to run for reelection in 2014, I will reaffirm my support. I also think estate taxes should be abolished and the individual mandate included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 was a conservative approach to healthcare policy that can be appreciated.

Eastern Michigan University students had the opportunity Oct. 10 to hear people speak on Proposal 4. The purpose of the proposal is to create a registry that will link seniors and people with disabilities with pre-screened, certified and trained home healthcare workers, as well as provide financial services to patients to manage the cost of in-home care.

Michigan residents will be voting whether or not to approve Proposal 2, the so-called Protect Our Jobs amendment, on the Nov. 6 ballot. Proposal 2 would add the right to collectively bargain, for both public and private sector employees, to the state constitution.

The rise of the smartphone has been a major boon for nearly everyone who has one in the palm of their hand. It sends and receives text messages all over the world, stores your music catalog, takes photos, gives you directions when you get lost, looks up that author whose name you can’t remember and I guess makes phone calls, too. Unfortunately, it also causes many of us to pay less attention to our real-world surroundings and the human beings in them.

Around this time of year, with Halloween just around the corner, people can be a little superstitious. Historical buildings, old crime scenes and dark cemeteries often give rise to stories and sightings of ghosts and other eerie presences. Some say it’s just folklore. But in a city with a past as rich as Ypsilanti’s, there very well could be some spirits who’ve yet to cross over and remain earthbound, haunting our community.

Eastern Michigan University held the Statewide Ballot Informative Forum Oct. 9 in the Halle Library Auditorium to answer students’ questions and give details on the plans and development of Proposal 6, which if passed would require voters to approve any new bridge or tunnel from Michigan to Canada. The proposal was filed in response to a suggested new bridge between Detroit and Windsor.

After the first presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the focus of the nation was to see how the debate affected both candidates in their campaigns. CNN polled likely voters before the debate and found that 56 percent predicted the president to be the winner. Following the debate, their polls showed that 67 percent named Romney the victor with 25 percent feeling Obama won.
