The Jalin Billingsley (Cleveland, Ohio/Lutheran East/Georgetown) show was on Friday afternoon at the George Gervin GameAbove Center. In his final home opener, the senior dropped a career-high 32 points and ten rebounds, including 17 in the first half, to give the Eastern Michigan men’s basketball team a much-needed bounce-back victory against Siena Heights, 83-58. “[Jalin Billingsley] was really a big force for us,” Eagles head coach Stan Heath said after the game. Alongside Billingsley, Jalen Terry (Flint, Michigan/Beecher/Oregon/DePaul) and Yusuf Jihad (Farmington Hills, Michigan/North Farmington/Oakland) also both added double figures to the scoreboard with 14 and 10 points respectively, Terry tallying nine rebounds in his near double-double effort. The Eagles also posted an elite defensive effort, holding Siena Heights to a 35.4% field goal percentage (23/65) and a 20.7% mark from behind the arc (6/29). The Saints only scored 25 points the entire second half, a pivotal factor that helped Eastern Michigan pull away down the stretch. “We stopped giving up easy baskets,” Heath said, explaining why the Eagles extended their lead from seven at the half to a game-high of 25 during the closing stages. “I think that triggered offense from our defense, and that’s what kinda gave us more of a cushion, some more transition baskets,” he added. The Eagles improved to 1-1 on the campaign, while Siena Heights dropped to 0-3. Eastern Michigan bounced back strongly from a close loss earlier this week in the season opener against Texas State. “Anytime you shake off the cobwebs from a game you didn’t play so well, that’s good for your psyche,” Heath said. “When you got young players on the team, you want to feel good emotionally,” he added. The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 14, at a matchup on the road against IU-Indianapolis, which is awaiting the squad. “We know our backs are against the wall, so we know that we got to come in every day, you know, put our head down and work to finish out strong. Because there's still hope… depending on how everything plays out in [the] conference. But I feel like we are at a good pace right now, and we just have to continue to keep coming in, working day in and day out… and stay with the game plan, stay with the coaches, and still have that chemistry as a team,” said Markus Allen, Eastern Michigan University wide receiver, after the heartbreaking loss against University of Toledo.

Midway through the third quarter, the Eastern Michigan women’s basketball team was looking formidable, with a 17-point lead and a victory in the opening game of the 2024 season in sight. However, the Texas State Bobcats had other plans. Outscoring the Eagles 41-20 the rest of the way, the Bobcats made a furious run to not only get themselves back into the game, but take control down the stretch; forcing a critical late turnover that spoiled head coach Sahar Nusseibeh’s Eastern Michigan debut and dropped the team to 0-1 after the season opener. “We just have to develop a winning mentality,” Nusseibeh said in her post-game remarks. The Eagles’ second-half collapse did not overshadow the monster performance of a few notable players on the squad. Sisi Eleko (Montreal, Quebec/New Hope Academy/Canisius) began her debut with the team by dropping 10 of Eastern Michigan’s first 17 points of the game in the opening quarter alone and finished the night with 28 points total, a new career high along with nine rebounds on 11/16 shooting from the floor. “Sisi [Eleko] is a tremendous player. I coached her for two years, and she’s just dominant,” Nusseibeh said during Eleko’s dazzling debut for the team. Olivia Westphal (Bethel Park, Pennsylvania/Bethel Park/Duquesne) added 20 points of her own on the night in a new career-high scoring mark for herself, starting the game off by making five straight three-point attempts, while Mackenzie Amalia (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk/Canisius), also making her Eastern Michigan debut, posted a career-high 12 assists on the stat sheet as well. “I’m really encouraged and really excited, and [the team] should be as well,” Nusseibeh said in regards to how she plans to keep the team’s morale up following such a tough defeat. “I can’t wait to see the improvements we make the next few days in practice and what Saturday looks like,” she added. The Eagles return to the floor this Saturday, Nov. 9, at home at 1 p.m. in a contest against Alabama A&M, the game being streamed live on ESPN+.
