A couple of weeks ago, my fellow opinions columnist, Andrew Kocis, wrote an article about how similar our generation, the Millennials, is to the post-WWI “Lost Generation.” It was about this same point in history where the controversial “bob” haircut grew in increased popularity and I can’t help but compare it to the pixie-cut trend that’s going around today.

It’s nearly impossible not to have heard: V Month is staking its claim in February at Eastern Michigan University with events as varied as the numerous topics covered in its main event, The Vagina Monologues.

While some aspects of our lives encourage us to cultivate the creative mind, the academic sphere is generally not one of them. We inhale information just to regurgitate it on a test later. We write essay after essay in a structured format to get them over and done with until all the passive voice builds up and every paper starts to sound the same. While some projects and presentations open doors to more colorful thought, we may not realize that it is just as boring and painful for professors to read our papers as it is boring and painful for us to write them.

I think it’s safe to say that the U.S. is a country of workaholics. To be lounging around in the summer months in high school is deemed laziness. College has turned into an assumed pre-requisite for employment instead of learning for learning’s sake and the second thing your uncle asks you about at Christmas dinner after your grades is where you’re working.

As students, every day of school is about working toward that long-awaited degree we hope will propel us into a better future. Yet as we continually are working toward the future, it’s not uncommon to hear our peers and ourselves mention how little they want to think about the future. Live in the present, we say.

Maybe you’ve heard it through the grapevine, seen it in a post on EMU’s Facebook page or read it in the Echo. One thing’s for sure: You probably know about the smoking ban taking effect next summer on EMU’s campus.

Stress is most likely the most common word spoken on a college campus. It follows us around like Eeyore’s little raincloud as we try to eat, sleep, and Netflix it away. While it may seem easiest to zone out and scroll through Tumblr for hours as a break from studying or writing a massive paper, sometimes the best thing is to lightly exercise your brain in a way that keeps it awake and yet doesn’t exhaust it further. One way to do this is by working with your hands. If doing a load of dishes or scrubbing down the bathroom isn’t your coping mechanism, one beneficial and creative way I’ve found to use your hands is needlework.

Growing up, my parents were very instrumental in making sure that Thanksgiving was a day on which we made time to pause and think about the past year and all the things we were thankful for. We were each given a large sheet of poster paper and the crayon box because instead of writing everything down, we had to draw it. These annual pieces of art turned into one of my most cherished family traditions, but they only covered the here-and-now aspect of the holiday. The history was an afterthought.

Setting aside all of the Democrat and Republican shuffling around, Michigan’s 2014 election this year centered on wolves. Now, if you’re like me, you probably weren’t even aware of this unless you happened to look up a version of the ballot a week or two before the first Tuesday of November. You most likely skimmed through both proposals too quickly the first time to really digest them and then just asked your roommate for his or her opinion. Unless you’re a fantastic citizen, you know this is true.
