Eastern Michigan University continued negotiating last week with two of its eight labor unions: the EMU chapter of the American Association of University Professors which is representing faculty members, and the clerical staff UAW 1975 union. The university already reached an agreement with the police officers’ union on June 26.

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents adopted a 2012-13 budget June 19 that includes a general fund operating budget of $290.6 million, an auxiliary activities operating budget of $42.1 million and a capital budget of $21.7 million. The board also received a three year capital plan.

Jesse Thomason, manager of the Crossroads Bar and Grill in Ypsilanti, stood before the Ypsilanti City Council on Tuesday evening, May 15. He was there to answer questions from council members about his application for a dance and entertainment permit to add to the Class C liquor license Crossroads obtained in 2011.

Eastern Michigan University President Susan Martin introduced the first of three April public forums on EMU’s strategic planning process at 2 p.m. on Tuesday in 308 Pray-Harrold, to an audience of 15 people.
Martin said the challenges the University faces are “a brutal 15 percent cut last year, followed by small one time increases this year and probably next.”

The long-empty 38-acre Water Street site on Michigan Avenue just east of central Ypsilanti might become the site of a public recreation center if the Ypsilanti City Council takes up a proposal from Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Department.
Teresa Gillotti, Director of Planning for the city, said, “This is a great project. The devil is in the details. Most people feel positive about it, but we need to get appropriate public input.”
