Abigail Fisher is a white Texan who applied to the University of Texas and was denied admission. On Oct. 10, NPR further explained that Fisher claims the denial was caused by her skin color; that is, because the University of Texas utilizes race conscious admission policies, otherwise known as affirmative action. As the Supreme Court is now hearing her case against the University of Texas, and affirmative action at large, we would do well to consider the issue, too.

The presidential race has been interesting to say the least, particularly in the last few weeks. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney had an excellent debate performance in Denver, President Barack Obama benefited from the unemployment rate dropping to a notably low 7.8 percent and Sesame Street’s Big Bird may possibly sue for defamation. One issue both candidates are remaining relatively quiet about (relative to the economy anyway) is an incredibly important one: foreign policy.

If you haven’t noticed the chalk on the sidewalks around Eastern Michigan University’s campus, random strangers asking for your vote on your emich.edu account or Eagle Nation’s energized (perhaps even more energized than usual) personnel, I should inform you that it’s that special time of year: Homecoming.

Voting is important. We know this. We need only stroll through campus and see the “Rock the Vote” T-shirts and posters to know this is what Eastern Michigan University would have us believe.

Take a stroll through campus during the summer months, and you will quickly find that Eastern Michigan University’s campus is dead. Few people walk the sidewalks, resident advisors aren’t nearly as stressed and parking is relatively easy to find. Fortunately, those days are over.

Recently, Republican Congressman Todd Akin received a firestorm of criticism for his dangerous and stupid remarks about rape.

Recently, hundreds of students graduated from Eastern Michigan University. Decorated caps, rehearsed congratulations and high spirits characterized the time and elders hoped to imbue the graduates with a completely uninhibited optimism. Nonetheless, I think the, “You can do anything you want to do!” speeches are tired and near meaningless.

Warren Buffett, the outspoken business billionaire, published a well-known editorial a few months ago in The New York Times that criticized what he called a “billionaire-friendly Congress.”

One of my daily rituals is to read the day’s tweets, sort of like a modern day reading of the newspaper. Most of the time they reek of the trivial, hilarious and angsty spirit that occupies most people our age.

Eastern Michigan University is one of the most LGBT-accepting schools in the country. A simple walk around campus is a testament to our university’s socially liberal streak. Yet even as most Eagles glow with pride at Eastern’s accepting nature, they do so with little consideration given to the last letter of the famous acronym.

On Oct. 30, 1938, author Orson Welles narrated his famous story, “The War of the Worlds.” After the radio narration a widespread hysteria took place, as many actually believed aliens were invading their world. The radio drama drew scathing criticism for its “realism.” I suspect, however, that more so than realism, mob mentality convinced the scared listeners they were about to be obliterated or subjugated.

Facebook is excellent for multiple tasks: creeping on friends, following those melodramas we call other peoples’ relationships and, of course, flexing our “social activism.”

The Moonlite Bunny Ranch is a legal brothel in Nevada and a focal point for controversy. While it was once featured on HBO’s Cathouse, it is also used as an example of our country’s moral decay. While it might be considered heaven for sexually frustrated preteens, it might as well be hell for the Religious Right.

A few years ago, radio personality Don Imus lit a firestorm of controversy after making several derogatory statements about the Rutger’s Women’s Basketball team – calling them, “nappy-headed hoes.” Soon after the backlash, sponsors pulled their backing, and Imus was fired. History, as the cliché goes, has a way of repeating itself.

Sports, for many people, are life. They are also an interesting microcosm of a larger American society: from Jackie Robinson’s breaking down baseball’s racial barriers to Muhammed Ali’s divisive tirades against American militarism (as particularly exemplified in Vietnam). Fast-forward to 2012 and we have a new focal point for conversation: Linsanity.

Nothing is more interesting than listening to two people discuss the multiplicity of conundrums facing international politics today. Whether it is Iran’s intransigence regarding its testing of nuclear power or the explosive turmoil continually ravaging much of Africa, we inevitably find ourselves reflecting on the role of the United States in relation to the rest of the world. Ultimately however, it seems America is ready, to some extent, to turn inward and let the world police itself. Nonetheless, that decision merits reflection.

Keep A Breast Foundation is a national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and eradicating cancer for the American public. Perhaps its most famous move is the backing of the humorous and some would say provocative, “I Love Boobies” bracelets. While the bands were certainly born from good intentions, we must question the implications of such a sentiment.

“So what we get drunk, so what we smoke weed, we’re just havin’ fun and we don’t care who sees!” This is the opening line of the popular song “Young, Wild and Free,” from rappers Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg. The anthem predictably champions marijuana usage, and I can think of few people who are better to create such a song.

I compete for the Eastern Michigan University forensics team. As a result, I meet people from all over the country who share a love for interpretation, critical analysis and communication in general. However, I was caught off guard when a woman I met from Illinois State University gave a speech in which she proudly declared that she was “Greek,” that is, she is in a sorority.

Detroit, Michigan was once a bustling metropolis, its streets humming with an optimism characterizing the American dream. Unfortunately, those streets have been silenced, scarred with the telltale signs of a city brought to its knees in a nightmare scenario few saw coming.
