Murder suspect fit for trial

Dominic Oyerinde was found competent to stand trial for open murder and car jacking charges by a Washtenaw County Circuit Court Judge for the death of his ex-girlfriend, 17-year-old Anna List, prompting Oyerinde, 20, to request to defend himself. He quietly said he wanted to defend himself instead of his current public defender, Timothy Niemann.

Ypsilanti rejects two proposed millages

Both the local millage proposal in Ypsilanti Township, and the county-wide millage proposal were rejected by voters Tuesday. Election results are according to preliminary numbers released by the Washtenaw County Clerk’s Office, which will not become official until approved by the Washtenaw County Board of Canvassers, which is expected by Monday.

Vote will come on bee-keeping

City Council voted to postpone a decision on an ordinance that would allow bee-keeping in Ypsilanti Tuesday night. In a 6-1 decision, with Councilmember Brian Robb, D-Ward 3, voting against, the measure was postponed while changes are made to the ordinance.

Aggravated assault on Huron Drive under police investigation

Police are investigating an aggravated assault that took place near Eastern Michigan University Monday, according to a release from EMU Police. According to an e-mail release to the “campus community” this afternoon, an EMU student was assaulted by three men on the 800 block of Huron River Drive near Ann Street at 9 p.m.

Fire Department to bill for services

The Ypsilanti Fire Department hopes to generate as much as $36,000 a year in revenue after City Council approved the ability to bill for services. An ordinance approved unanimously on second reading by City Council Tuesday allows the department to bill for costs rendered during emergency calls, unless the call is a structure fire.

Municipal employee's union files grievance in Ypsilanti Township

Ypsilanti Township’s municipal employees union have filed a grievance against the township. Township officials said the local chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union filed its grievance shortly after the Township reduced hours for municipal employees to 32 hours a week.

Lincoln braces for a large loss in state revenue

Faced with a loss of approximately $1 million in state revenue, Lincoln Consolidated is beginning to look at how it would make up the difference to balance its own budget. Superintendent Lynn Cleary said she would have a presentation made for the next board of education meeting outlining where cuts could come from and the impact those cuts would have on the district. Ypsilanti bus service may stay at current levels, despite a $123,000 shortfall in the amount the city will be charged by the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority.

'Talk' program aims to fill community center

The idea is, if you show up on a Monday or Wednesday with $5 in your pocket there is going to be something for you to do. It’s the Talk of the Neighborhood, a new brand of programming at the Recreation Park Community Center. The brain-child of Ypsilanti resident Georgie Pachella, Talk of the Neighborhood is a play on the name of National Public Radio’s daily program Talk of the Nation.
