New to the Echo this year will be my weekly column on the five things to take away from each EMU football game, so I hope this will evoke some quality comments and discussion throughout the season. 1) Redshirt junior Tyler Benz’s Performance: Despite throwing a first quarter interception, Benz was able to regain his composure and connect on 19 passes in 26 attempts for 210 yards and two touchdown passes.

Former EMU football player passes away

Former Eastern Michigan University football running back/punt returner Marcus Mathews passed away Wednesday at the age of 48, the university announced in a press release Friday morning. Mathews graduated from Cooley High School in his hometown of Detroit, Mich.


	Defensive tackle Jason Jones (left center) was drafted 54th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft. He has played in 61 NFL games and has 92 tackles and 18.5 sacks.

Wednesday was one of the biggest college football holidays of the year: National Signing Day. At 7 a.m., National Letters of Intent were finally allowed to be submitted to the schools where thousands of players from high school stars to college transfers were able to officially declare where they will be playing college football in the fall of 2013.

English picks Parrish to coordinate offense

Head coach Ron English announced Monday that Stan Parrish would be the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Michigan University. Parrish will be replacing previous offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ken Karcher.

I’ve been getting a lot of feedback, positive and negative, about the Dec. 3 column I wrote about Eastern Michigan University’s head football coach Ron English, and I’d like to clear the air on a few matters.


Football fallout

The Eastern Michigan University Athletic Department and football team announced Tuesday offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ken Karcher is “no longer a member of the EMU coaching staff.” On the heels of a 2-10 season, it was clear that a change needed to be made and Karcher ended up being the program’s choice.
