Model UN club participates in Chicago conference

Eastern Michigan University’s Model United Nations club traveled to Chicago last week to participate in the American Model United Nations Conference (AMUNC). EMU brought two delegations, one representing Guatemala and the other representing Palestine.


People protest EMU’s involvement with EAA

Dozens of people, including Eastern Michigan University faculty members, gathered in front of Welch Hall and in the Halle Auditorium Tuesday to protest the university’s involvement with the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan.



Digital Inclusion store opens

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new location of Eastern Michigan University’s Digital Inclusion store took place on Monday, Nov. 25 at Sill Hall in the College of Technology between noon and 2:00 p.m.

Ypsi, EMU collaborate for community safety

Following a series of violent crimes in the area around campus, including the death of Eastern Michigan University student Demarius Reed, officials from both the EMU Police Department and the Ypsilanti Police Department have worked to strengthen relationships between the university and the city.



Two men arrested in connection with Reed homicide

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Eastern Michigan University football player Demarius Reed, according to court records. The Ann Arbor News reported that Ed Jemeal Thomas and Kristopher Kaivon Pratt, both 20, face charges murder and robbery charges.

Certification exam changes threaten education students

The Michigan Department of Education announced new testing standards in the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) earlier this month. Education majors are required to pass this standardized certification test before obtaining their teaching license in the state of Michigan.

EMU to apply for environmental grant

Eastern Michigan University’s Board of Regents held a special meeting on Wednesday at Welch Hall to briefly discuss the recommendation to approve EMU’s submission of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and the Storm Water Asset Management and Waste Water (SAW) grant application.

The B. Side’s Digital Inclusion store— A computer refurbishment and technical training project called Digital Inclusion has opened a shop in Sill Hall at the College of Technology on Eastern Michigan University’s campus.

Students For Life, ADF lawsuit resolved

·

The lawsuit between Eastern Michigan University and the Christian legal ministry Alliance Defending Freedom has been resolved. Under the resolution, the university’s Student Government will amend its fund allocations to accommodate all student groups. EMU’s insurance company, Michigan Universities Self-Insurance Corporation will pay the plaintiffs’ attorney fees of $3,000.

Nov. 19 An unknown subject wrote a Twitter name in permanent marker on an elevator in Pittman Hall at 1:13 a.m. The same Twitter name also appeared on whiteboards in the building. Police are following up on the investigation.


Planned Parenthood holds informational talk

Lauren Bacans, a Planned Parenthood field organizer for Livingston and Washtenaw counties, gave an informational lecture in the Student Center on Wednesday as part of Planned Parenthood’s initiative to help people become acquainted with the opportunities presented by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Nov. 16 A student was suspected of marijuana use in Hoyt Hall at 6:41 p.m. Nothing was found, and the student was not charged.

EMU’s #GivingTuesday— On Dec. 3, Eastern Michigan University will host a one-day fundraising campaign. According to an article from EMU’s Division of Communications, the campaign will correspond with the national #GivingTuesday movement. This national movement promotes charitable events that support nonprofit organizations.

Students give opinions on new gaming consoles

On Friday, Sony launched its latest gaming console, the PlayStation 4. Sales were so high over the weekend that Sony’s platform for online gaming and selling game downloads, the PlayStation Network, had network issues due to high traffic on launch day.
