Lincoln braces for a large loss in state revenue

Faced with a loss of approximately $1 million in state revenue, Lincoln Consolidated is beginning to look at how it would make up the difference to balance its own budget. Superintendent Lynn Cleary said she would have a presentation made for the next board of education meeting outlining where cuts could come from and the impact those cuts would have on the district. Police Blotter for Sept. 25-28

A vehicle owner reported hit-and-run damage to their vehicle in the Mayhew Lot. The damage occurred on two days earlier on Sept. 23 between 8:45 and 10 a.m. Neither police nor the owner knows who caused the damage and there are currently no investigative leads.

Internet forums help Iraqi refugees adapt

BAGHDAD — “Mozart” is the screen name of a 44-year-old guitar-playing Iraqi refugee who was resettled in the United States recently. In a posting this month to a popular online forum for Iraqis emigrating to the West, Mozart rattled off his many accomplishments: an economics degree from a prestigious Iraqi university, a diploma from an arts institute, experience in tourism and restaurant management, and 25 years as a musician with an Iraqi band.

Swine flu might hit a third of Americans

BETHESDA, Md. – H1N1 swine flu likely will be the dominate flu strain this year, out-competing seasonal flu and infecting as many as one-third of Americans, according to Anthony Fauci, the federal government’s top infectious disease expert. “This is a virus that spreads absolutely as efficiently as a virus can spread,” Fauci said in a meeting Thursday with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other reporters. The good news is while the virus spreads easily, it produces mild disease in most people, said Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.
