Eagle Journey is a Q & A series in which Sports Editor Eugene Evans will get to know some of the Eastern Michigan University student-athletes and why they chose to come here. This week’s feature focuses on senior multi-position track and field athlete Sarah Chauchard, from Montpellier, France.


	Eastern Michigan University’s 32 student-athletes who earned 4.0 GPA’s this past fall, some of whom are pictured above, prove that brains and brawn can go together well.

Student-Athletes demonstrate balance

It is no easy task to balance playing sports and academics, but 32 Eastern Michigan University student-athletes achieved both and then some by finishing the Fall 2013 semester with a 4.0 grade point average.

The Eastern Michigan University women’s track and field team took part in the Simmons Invitational on Jan. 18. The event took place at the University of Michigan and included athletes from Michigan, The University of Notre Dame, and Mid-American Conference opponent Bowling Green State University.

The Eastern Michigan University men’s track and field team took part in the Harvey Invitational on Jan. 18. The event was not scored and took place at the University of Michigan.

Eastern Michigan University’s women’s track and field team took a decided victory against in-state rivals Oakland University and the University of Detroit Mercy on Jan. 10. The schools took part in the EMU Triangular at Bowen Fieldhouse.

Ijah breaks record, track team sweeps heptathalon

The Eastern Michigan University’s men’s track and field team had five athletes compete in the Findlay Oiler Opener on Friday and Saturday and left the competition with a 1-2-3 sweep in the men’s heptathlon.

The Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s cross-country teams raced to victories in the EMU Fall Classic on Friday, Oct. 25. The meet was held at the Green and White’s home at Hudson Mills Metropark-North Course in Dexter, Mich.

The Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s cross-country teams were hoping for better finishes Friday at the 58th annual Notre Dame Invitational, but their experience will have to do for now.

Track and field season comes to an end

As the lone representative of the Eastern Michigan University track and field team, as well as the sole Mid-American Conference runner, Sophomore Victoria Voronko’s season came to an end over the weekend as she finished 21st in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Eugene, Ore. Voronko finished with a time of 10 minutes, 30.5 seconds, finishing nine spots shy of qualifying for the finals. 2012 Olympian and Colorado University senior Emma Coburn went on to capture the 3,000-meter steeplechase title in 9:35.38, while Florida State University sophomore Colleen Quigley and Weber State University junior Amber Henry placed second and third with times of 9:38.23 and 9:43.89, respectively. This is Coburn’s third overall national title as she captured the 2011 and 2013 indoor steeplechase titles. Other Notable Championship Results: University of Michigan redshirt sophomore Amanda Eccleston finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:14.56 to earn All-America first team honors. University of Notre Dame senior Rebecca Tracy placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:14.42, while junior Alexa Aragon crossed the line eighth in 9:57.26. On the men’s side, Michigan junior Ali Arastu finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 49.37.

On a cold and windy weekend that resembled winter more than spring, the Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the EMU Twilight Invitational at Olds/Marshall Track on Friday and Saturday.

Sophomores Victoria Voronko, Cameron Bolton and redshirt sophomore Warren Witchell highlighted 19 top-five finishes for the Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Sea Ray Relays which took place in Knoxville, Tenn., this past weekend.


	The men’s track team performed well at the Silverston Invitational Saturday, sweeping three events. The women’s team swept the 200-meter run.

The Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s track and field teams took a short trip to the Silverston Invitational in Ann Arbor Saturday for one final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference championships. Both teams performed admirably despite only sending partial squads, turning in very strong performances against stiff competition.


EMU dominates at Eagle Holiday Meet

The Eastern Michigan University women’s track and field team started the season off Friday with a dominant victory at the Eagle Holiday Meet over Central Michigan University, Bowling Green State University, the University of Toledo and Oakland University.

The Eastern Michigan University men’s track and field team opened their season in dominant fashion Dec. 7 against the Central Michigan University Chippewas and the Oakland University Grizzlies. The Eagles won 12 of 14 events.
