The Eastern Michigan women’s gymnastics team was able to pick up one win over Bowling Green State University but fell to Western Michigan University in this afternoon’s Mid-American Conference tri-meet in Kalamazoo.
Eastern Michigan (4-1, 1-1 MAC) finished with a season high score of 195.050 but Western Michigan (3-0, 2-0 MAC) finished with a 195.275. Bowling Green (0-4, 0-2 MAC) finished with a 193.575. The Eagles looked to contributions from sophomores Kendall Valentin and Catie Conrad, who both competed all-around scoring 39.025 and 38.950, respectively.
“They’re doing a great job,” EMU coach Jay Santos said. “They’re working hard. They’ve been working hard for a long time. It’s always great when people who are working hard get that result. They’re going to be a big part of our success.”
The Eagles also saw strong contributions from senior Kimberly Ebeyer, who scored a 9.75 on vault, a 9.75 on the balance beam and a 9.725 on the floor exercise. Sophomore Rachel Slocum scored a 9.825 on floor and a 9.775 on the vault.
"We definitely made some improvements, but sometimes we had a good routine going and then something would happen and bring the score down," Santos said. "We started on beam and the team came out rock solid, really strong and really aggressive. I felt like they kept that energy going throughout the meet, but we definitely need to finish routines a little bit stronger and not give the judges an opportunity to knock that score down a bit."
Up Next:
The Eagles travel to Muncie, Ind. next Sunday against Ball State University and Illinois State University. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
