Phase one of the $16 million renovation to the REC/IM will not be open in time for the start of the fall 2019 semester as originally expected. A delay in receiving materials is the cause for the hold up.

“Unfortunately one of the vendors experienced delays in receiving materials for new air handlers for the gymnasium and track areas,” said Bob Densic, manager of planning and design. “The anticipated completion date is September 30 at which time we will be able to reopen the newly renovated floors 3-5 for use.”

Floor three will include four basketball courts available for recreational use, intramural and club sports, and HPHP classes. Floor four will feature an indoor track, 11 treadmills and 15 other pieces of cardio equipment including rowers, bikes, and ellipticals. There will also be three cable machines, five weight machines and a stretching area.

The fifth floor will double as a meeting space and fitness area until floors one and two are open. Once those floors are open, the area will be used for meetings, training and small events.

In the meantime, students can still take advantage of the REC/IM’s services through the temporary location in the Warner Building.

“The REC/IM is operating from a swing space during periods of the construction project,” said Director of Recreation, Wesley Howell. “Throughout the summer of 2019, the REC/IM Membership Desk and facilities spaces have been, and will continue to be, located in the Warner Building until the entire REC/IM facility opens in 2020.”

The membership desk, where students can sign up for personal training, intramural sports or ask questions, will remain in Warner room 216 until the project’s completion in the fall of 2020.

The following services will also be available in Warner:

  • Basketball court (Warner Gym B)
  • Weight room (Warner 134b)
  • Fitness classes (Warner 132b)
  • Cardio space and selectorized weight machines (Warner 208)
