Student carjacking claim false

The claim of an attempted carjacking in Eastern Michigan University’s Oakwood south lot was found to be false.

The student admitted to the campus police the story was fabricated on Oct. 8. The case will be forwarded to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office and will request charges of making a false police report, according to Police Chief Greg O’Dell.

“The problem with this is we don’t want to waste our resources if a crime didn’t actually happen,” said O’Dell.

The original claim made Sept. 30 was that a man was in the backseat of the student’s vehicle. When she entered her car, the man demanded her keys and the student punched him in the face. The man then allegedly ran off.

Filing a false police report of a carjacking may be considered a felony in Michigan, punishable by up to four years in prison and a $2,000 fine
