In the Echo’s recent article on the proposed legislation to allow the carrying of weapons on campus, a variety of critics voiced their concerns. As a supporter of this bill, I would like to address those points. First, to Police Chief O’Dell, who said, “Say you have a situation where officers are pulling up and everyone has guns. There’s no way of telling who the bad guys are.”

Bravo Gordon, A well thought out and well written article. People oppsosed to the carrying of firearms should just read the facts. As you stated, licensed concealed carry permit holders are an extremely law abiding group of people, far more so than the general public. There are many studies, including from the FBI and the Michigan State Police to back this up. I am just of the opinion that if confronted by someone like the Virginia Tech shooter or the Fort Hood shooter that is deciding whether I will live or die, I want to have a firm say in that process and my concealed pistol gives me that chance.

When—not if, when, because the world is full of crazy people and it’s only a matter of time before one of them is an undergrad at EMU—an unstable individual starts running through Pray Harrold spraying bullets, I sincerely hope that there will be many others who AREN’T crazy there with guns to stop him. I would also like to point out that an individual must be 21 years old to get a CCW, so most of the people whose maturity I question—namely, the freshmen who have never lived without mommy holding their hands—won’t be given the right to carry anyways.

Next thing you know, I won’t be allowed to carry my pepper spray anymore because DPS is 100% capable of making sure I never get mugged or raped on or near campus, along with the other however-many-thousands of women are on campus.
