This week, the Ann Arbor-based bookstore Borders is expected to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. One estimate suggests 50 percent of Borders’ stores will close in the next five years, with 90 percent hanging an “out of business” sign by the end of the decade.

I for one do not like eReaders. I don’t like the feel, or the smell, and I don’t like the interaction. I regularly go into the book store to browse, to read a few pages, and look for new ideas, and for continuing series. eReaders may be good for people that already know what they want to read, but many of the things I like to read are not available for them.

eReaders are not a great democracy. They are actually problmatic as there is far less available for them than is in print. And something that is out of print, and only are used bookstores, forget finding it for the eReader.

I have already seen the decline of books in the public library. I am saddened that it is human nature to be so short sighted that we will allow the decline of local businesses and resources to the point that we will not have any choices.

I liked Borders, and Waldenbook before it, far better than Barnes and Noble, but I guess there won’t be much choice left in the future.
