Though it might just seem like a new month, there is something about this time of year that doesn’t get talked about as much as it should. For the next couple of months, many people will experience a gloomy feeling that looms over them, but what causes this?

As of Jan. 16, the government shutdown has lasted twenty-six days. The shutdown was caused by President Donald Trump’s unreasonable demands for $5 billion for his border wall and Democrats’ refusal to meet this demand.

James Patton was named the new offensive line coach for the Eastern Michigan football team by head coach Chris Creighton on Jan. 16, and that should have fans, myself included, very excited. Patton was the offensive quality control assistant for the University of Pittsburgh the past two seasons.

Whether it’s photos at the beach, a night out with friends, or selfies with your cat, we all tend to share the best parts of our life on social media. Social media was designed to be a place for people to share what they’ve been up to or branch out and meet new people. However, it has turned into something much more serious. Social networking sites, such as Facebook and Instagram, are starting to become less like entertainment and more like an addiction for many users, whether they realize it or not.

In October, a speaker at the University of Michigan presented a lecture slide likening Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler. In Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue, a gunman went on a shooting spree—killing 11 and injuring more—with the chilling battle cry “All Jews must die.” And this week, right here on EMU’s own campus, a message originally showing solidarity with the victims of the Pittsburgh shooting and the broader Jewish community was partially painted over, the new version—four key letters shorter than the original—reading “Together Against Semitism.”

On Dec. 9, a journalist for the Eastern Echo reported that a message condemning anti-semitism on the freedom walls had been tampered with. The freedom walls, located between Pray-Harrold and the Snow Health Center, had been painted by Hillel at EMU on Nov. 9. One of the walls read, “Together Against Antisemitism”. Sunday, it was discovered that the word “anti” was painted over, so the message then read, “Together Against Semitism”.

With the holidays coming up, many students will be heading home to spend time with family. For some, this sounds like a dream. No assignments to worry about, possibly not needing to go to work, and spending time with loved ones you don’t get too see too often. Recently, the Women’s Resource Center announced it would end productions of The Vagina Monologues. The reason? It’s insufficiently diverse and inclusive. First, let me be clear that I agree with that assessment, and I claim no attachment to the continuation of the monologues. But even as a queer feminist, soon to be graduating from Eastern’s Women’s and Gender Studies program, I write this: it’s a terrible mistake to end the monologues on a basis that boils down to The Vagina Monologues do it wrong.

Last Monday was one of the most exciting football games I have ever witnessed. The Kansas City Chiefs took on the Los Angeles Rams in a battle that best compared to Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali exchanging punches through 15 rounds. By the end of the game both teams totaled 105 points, 1001 yards and 7 turnovers. I loved it.
