In my two year tenure at The Echo, I have written far too many articles bashing Detroit sports and crying about how all they do is lose. While it is true that Detroit doesn’t have any majorly good sports teams currently, they are all looking to be on the upswing. This is most true with the Pistons, a team that hasn’t seen a playoff series win since 2008.

Teams like Illinois, Kansas, and Ohio State have all fallen to low seeded opponents, and now the Sweet Sixteen looks very bizarre. My bracket, along with many others, is absolutely toast, so I wanted to start over fresh at the Sweet Sixteen. These are my picks to move on to the Elite Eight.

During COVID-19, there have been blatant racial disparities among communities that are getting hit the hardest. Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous Americans pass away at about three times the rate white Americans pass from COVID-19. For some, statistics like these may be shocking, but for the people in those communities, this is only part of a larger problem in our country.

It isn’t very often that I find LGBTQ+ movies that don’t fall into the trap of stereotypes and clichés. Because of this, you can imagine how delighted I was to find Netflix’s The Half of It. This movie is wonderfully low-key about its queerness and it isn’t the entire theme of the film. It is a wonderful coming of age story that is great to throw on without having to think too much about things.

The COVID-19 pandemic has surely taken a toll on us all, in one way or another. But for people with disabilities, the toll is much more complex. It’s not just the fact that they are likely in a high-risk category, or being de-prioritized in the rollout of vaccinations. It’s seeing firsthand how accommodations are made for healthy individuals, while disabled people aren’t given that same courtesy.

Clem Turner is a music artist based in Asheville, North Carolina who has recently gained growing attention on social media. At just 19 years old, Turner is making his own music and posting covers on YouTube and Bandcamp. He’s extremely talented, and his recent attention is well deserved. Turner has self-described his music taste as “Alternative, Indie, [and] A Mess," but says he is “quite fond of messy music in many cases.”

There is just a little over a month separating us from the illustrious March Madness tournament. As most of us know, the 2020 NCAA tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19, breaking the hearts of college basketball fans everywhere. This year, however, it is looking like unless something drastic happens, we will see a March Madness tournament played in bubbles around the country.
