Auditions for the show were held on Thursday, and a wide array of musicians, dancers, singers and actors eagerly awaited their chance to hit the stage and make Jackson proud.

‘Color of Drums’ creatively commemorates Dr. King

Student theater troupe performs MLK show

“We used words like retard, fag, slut and nigger,” said Blake Navarre, a member of Eastern Michigan University’s CloseUP, when explaining the group’s latest performance. CloseUP is a traveling theater troupe that tackles social justice issues such as sexual orientation, racial tensions and religion. The group performed in the Student Center Auditorium on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and tried to integrate the works of King into modern day culture.

Local hip-hop artist releases debut album

After 5 years in the making, Ann Arbor native Harlin Newcomb, 35, will be celebrating the release of his freshman studio album, “Ground Zero,” Jan. 25 at The Blind Pig, located at 208 S. First St. in downtown Ann Arbor. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. and cover is $7 for 21 and up and $10 for 18-20. Newcomb and local rappers Nickie P., Bedroxx and Tru Klassick will be performing, along with DJ Chill Will from Tampa, Fla.

EMU's got talent: Students honor MLK through variety of performances

Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been proud if he could have seen the astounding displays of talent that were performed in his honor at the 15th Annual H2E Talent Showcase on Friday night. H2E, formally known as Hip Hop Explosion, is an event during the MLK weekend where the students of Eastern Michigan University are given a chance to showcase their various passions at Pease Auditorium for cash prizes, the top prize being $750.

Michigan promoters use MLK 'Freedom 2 Twerk' fliers, incite rage

When one thinks about Martin Luther King, Jr., there are many of qualities and contributions that come to mind: civil rights activist, God-fearing, revolutionary, a symbol of peace. But there’s a disconnect that exists with the younger generation on the significance of his work. A flier has created controversy with the image of King on a man’s body with a gold chain holding the “westside” gang symbol with the title “Freedom 2 Twerk: Martin Luther King Day Weekend Party.”
