Kate's Craft Corner: Build an inspiration board

·

Winter isn’t the season most people get excited about. Snowy roads, going back to school (without the same fresh anticipation fall brings) and the end of the holidays can leave one feeling completely void of energy, unmotivated and very uncreative.

My sweet tooth doesn’t stop at just solid foods. When I am feeling slightly parched in the wintertime, I like to snuggle up with a good book and sip on some warm, homemade apple cider.

Food Scoop: Spritz cookies

·

I came across my favorite holiday cooking gadget at a summer garage sale. It is a strange contraption, a sort of round aluminum tube with a twist-handle on one end and a series of metal disks with punched out shapes for the other end. When I found it, I recognized it immediately as a cookie press, used for making spritz cookies, also called butter cookies. Spritz cookies are perfect for winter holidays – attractive, fairly small and extremely addictive.

Katie's Craft Corner: Quick gifts

·

Christmas is less than a week away, so by now the idea of making a gift seems completely insane. Fortunately, not all handmade gifts need to take weeks to make, or even days – one day and a few easy steps is all you need to make one-of-a-kind presents for family and friends. One idea that’s both trendy and cute for all ages is hand-painted letters to hang on a wall.

Matt On Music: Burial

·

Releasing an album in December nowadays almost guarantees an artist from being excluded from year-end lists, since the majority of publications publish their lists at the beginning of the month. This year was especially hectic, with several notable albums coming out during the final month of the year, hopefully making publications question the logic of revealing their lists so early.

Katie's Craft Corner: Homemade aprons

·

When the holidays roll around, everyone begins to bake their annual favorites: pies, cookies, turkey and more, particularly for parties and family gatherings. Unfortunately for the klutzes among us, this means getting flour, chocolate and unknown mystery stains all over our nice clothes – a problem that’s been solved for ages with the humble apron.

Food Scoop: Vegetable Lo Mein

It’s the end of the semester, and I am feeling overwhelmed. The last couple weeks are always a rush of papers, presentations, and exams and it’s difficult to make time for real meals.
