‘Sylvia’ comes to Eastern Michigan University

Coming to the Eastern Michigan University Theatre, Ken Stevens is directing his final production called Sylvia. This interesting twist on how marriages face adversities was originally created by A. R. Gurney. Not only does this play aim to bring on laughter, it also plans to impress with impeccable actors who are some of Eastern Michigan’s Alumni.


Disney puts a dark new twist on a well-known fairy tale

Disney has put their magical touch on and revamped the movie Sleeping Beauty. Maleficent is not a story simply about a beautiful princess who falls into a deep slumber only to be awakened by the kiss of her truest love. This Disney story is darker. Maleficent travels into the bitter heart of a broken woman who swears she’ll get the last laugh.



Asparagus frittata is a tasty summer treat

Asparagus has been harvested worldwide for thousands of years. Its use dates back to ancient Rome and Egypt, where it was harvested for its nutritional content and once believed medicinal properties. This vegetable was so highly prized in Ancient Rome, fleets of ships were sent out to collect asparagus for royal emperors. This practice is believed to be the story behind this vegetable’s nickname, “the aristocrat of vegetables.”


Morel mushrooms a tasty treat

Every spring my fiancé and I look forward to scavenging in the woods for our favorite Michigan delicacy, morel mushrooms. Although Michiganders experienced a lengthy winter and late spring this year, the morel mushrooms have come through and can be found throughout the state.


Jolie Holland’s sixth album her best sound yet

Although she is defined as alternative/indie rock, Jolie Holland shifts across folk, country, jazz, and a little blues. With “Wine Dark Sea,” her sixth album since her debut “Catalpa” in 2003, Holland reaches her best sound so far with deeply emotional and slightly old-fashioned songs.

Layered Salad What you’ll need for a larger sized dish: 6 boiled eggs 1 package of bacon (or 3 bags of bacon pieces) 1 can water chestnuts Lettuce 1 jar or bottle of mayonnaise (Hellmann’s works best) 1 bag frozen sweet peas 2-3 tomatoes Rectangular tuber ware dish to hold it all in. Preparation: • Boil your eggs.


Black Keys get bluesy

A little over two years after the release of their award-winning album, “El Camino,” the Black Keys have released “Turn Blue.” Members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney collaborated with Danger Mouse to develop this new album, which saw a return to the heavy blues we saw in the 2010 album “Brothers.”

For Diego, a dance video created by Eastern Michigan University Professor of Dance Dr. Joanna McNamara will be presented May 20 at Zankel Hall in New York City, as part of a Manhattan Contemporary Chamber Ensemble (MCCE) performance.

Since this is my last column, I have thought a lot about what to write. I wanted to do something special. Something that was joyous, that celebrated the end of the year and the end of my college career. I was thinking about layer cakes, or something that requires a blowtorch. What changed my mind was the quiet arrival of the first asparagus.

Matt on Music: Sufjan Stevens and Girl Talk

Serengeti, Sufjan Stevens and Son Lux first collaborated on the fine 2012 EP “Beak & Claw,” credited as s / s / s. They’ve since changed their name to Sisyphus and recently released their first LP. Gregg Gillis is a mashup artist who goes by the name Girl Talk. He has released several terrific albums, most recently 2010’s “All Day.” His latest release is a collaboration with rapper Freeway, where he steps back from the role of mashup creator and into the role of producer.


Annual autism walk raises awareness

Wednesday, the men of Eastern Michigan University’s Iota Phi Theta Fraternity hosted their annual Autism Walk. The event was established in April 2012 by Thomas H. Crawford III, a member of the fraternity.

Julez DeShetler and Queso Tone catch up after a short hiatus due to illness and someones birthday. The pair talk about their semesters and the final big events of the year, the Eastern Echo Media Gala and Rock The Patio. The latter playing host to Eagletainment's very own Queso Tone as a musical performance, with the shows closing act Anthony Roperti a former guest of the show.
