Eating contest raises substantial sum for FLY Children's Art Center

·

A five-pound, 20-foot long sausage piled high with peppers and onions is a daunting sight, but 12 contestants attempted to devour the behemoth entree at an eating contest on Thursday at The Wurst Bar, located at 705 W. Cross St. The contest raised $7,251 for the FLY Children’s Art Center. The nonprofit organization is based in Ypsilanti and focuses on giving children access to making art in settings that promote creativity.

EMU professor presents the story of Lotte Reiniger

·

EMU continued to celebrate Women’s History Month’s focus on celebrating women of character, courage and commitment with “The Woman Before Disney, Lotte Reiniger’s Dancing Shadows,” presented by professor Margrit Zinggeler of the German Department. Although many think that Walt Disney produced the first full-length animated film, in truth a German woman working in this new field accomplished that feat in 1926.

Event puts Ypsi in the limelight

·

Ypsilanti has long been regarded as living in the shadow of its frequently exalted neighbor, Ann Arbor. This made Thursday night’s Ypsi Lives, held in McKenny Hall’s lounge, extremely refreshing. The event was tailor-made by Ypsilantians for Ypsilantians.

Food Scoop: Cabbage Soup

·

The daylight hours are getting longer by the minute, but it’s still cold enough to keep me in long sleeves and pants most days. In turn, I find myself thinking this is still the perfect weather for good, hot soup, or specifically, my mother’s excellent cabbage soup, swimming with winter vegetables and spicy flavors.

Food Scoop: Strawberry Milkshakes

·

Lately, I’ve been drinking strawberry milkshakes. Perfect, creamy, strawberry milkshakes. There’s something really lovely about coming home and finding out that the ingredients I need are, in fact, already in my refrigerator. My grocery list typically includes mundane things like milk, eggs and noodles. Strawberries are a treat, and I’ve been craving milkshakes ever since these shiny red babies came home.

The “Alice in Wonderland” themed prom, which took over the Student Center Ballroom for the night, was a huge success. Students walked down a red carpet with life-sized playing cards and danced the night away with “Alice in Wonderland” playing in the background.

Matt on Music: Mø & Skrillex

·

I’m reviewing two electronic albums this week, though I’m not sure Mø’s album even fits that description. Despite its earworm single “XXX 88,” the rest of her repertoire shows a lot of different directions. Too many, in fact.

Justin Moore performs at Convocation Center

·

Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center would have looked more at home Saturday night if it were surrounded by rows of corn and wheat fields instead of standing vigil on the border of EMU’s campus. Four-wheel drive trucks, girls clad in short skirts and cowboy boots and more guys in flannel since Nirvana was touring descended upon it in droves for the Justin Moore concert.

The Eastern Michigan University Student Center Auditorium hosted a colorful, vibrant and unique show Saturday night. The 15th annual Colors in Harmony filled the room with fashion, talent and culture from all around the world. From the moment the first performer took the stage, the audience was captivated, and the energy level remained high throughout the show.

Katie's Craft Corner: Celtic Knot

·

St. Patrick’s Day tends to be a widely celebrated “mini holiday” regardless of whether or not you’re Irish, as is perfectly acceptable, since it is a saint’s feast day and not so much a national holiday. Intricate Celtic knots are a more beautiful, history-laden way to dip into Irish heritage than the usual beer and leprechauns.

Food Scoop: Chocolate Chip Cookies

·

My little brother came home from college for spring break, so naturally I made chocolate chip cookies. Chocolate chip cookies are hardly a secret. The basic recipe for chocolate chip cookies is on the back of most packages of chocolate chips. The beautiful thing about them is how many people find them delicious. Put out a plate in most places heaped with chocolate chip cookies, and they’ll disappear with alacrity.
