Not into costumes, scary flicks? Try these

With Halloween Saturday there is much talk about costumes, booze and the plethora of scary movies. Now, there is nothing wrong with any of these for they make up a nice amount of Halloween activities people will be doing. However, if ridiculously skimpy costumes, Captain Morgan and being scared out of your wits is not your cup of tea, there are still plenty of great ways to celebrate Halloween.

You can throw a Halloween party inviting your closest friends and family. Make it a themed party such as Batman, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Zombies or whatever else is going to make your night. Make it mandatory for everyone to show up in costumes and then have a contest for who followed the theme of the party the best.

If you enjoy cooking, there are numerous foods you can make that follow the festive theme. Carve out your pumpkin and save the seeds. Let the seeds dry 24 hours and then bake them at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Add some salt and sugar before you bake them to give them a nice color and taste.

Cauldron cakes are another fun and tasty treat that makes enough to share. First, set up your deep fryer, pour in oil and set on medium heat. While your deep fryer is preheating, make pancake mix according to the directions on the box. An easy way to do this is to make only small batches then make more if you need it.

When the oil is preheated, which will take about 10-15 minutes, dip an Oreo in the batter then place it in the oil. You do not want to place more than five Oreos in the fryer, due to space. Remember the Oreos do no have to cook long; you only want to make them golden brown.

Do not cook longer than 1 minute otherwise you will overcook them. When done, place cauldron cakes on paper towel to drain the excess grease. Serve and enjoy, but be careful — they will be hot.

If you are family oriented you might want to go home and celebrat the holiday with loved ones. There are tons of movies to watch that do not center on blood and gore. Movies such as “Hocus Pocus,” “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Beetlejuice” are great for children of all ages and still entertaining and fun for adults.

For all the big kids who still want to dress up and go out trick or treating, you can be proactive while doing it. Gather up your friends and go trick or treating for charity. Instead of asking for candy ask for canned goods or non-perishables to donate to you local Salvation Army and churches. These local organizations would greatly appreciate the donation and you still get to dress up and go out and have fun.

There are many options for your Halloween activities, and you are not limited to the traditional aspects. Celebrate the holiday watching movies with family or trick or treating for canned goods.
