Beezy’s Restaurant is located on 20 North Washington Street in downtown Ypsilanti. Opened on Nov. 10, 2008, with only about 25 seats at the time, Beezy’s won current magazine’s readers’ poll for Best New Restaurant in 2009. This place delivers the simplest of breakfast, brunch and lunch food that would please anyone from vegetarians and vegans to carnivores.
The atmosphere of this restaurant is very friendly and inviting from the service, to its colorful yet casual setting. Customers can go in and order what they want from a handwritten menu on a large chalkboard, or a printed and smaller version of the menu and wait for their name to be called.
Owner of the restaurant, Bee Mayhew, can actually be found preparing food in the kitchen and the one to call you over when your order is ready. When it’s time to eat, you can be sure to expect authentic, fresh food with a twist.
Mayhew describes her type of food as, “Simple honest food. Things made from scratch and made from the heart. Simple breakfast where the ingredients and preparation shine; not fancy or expensive, just straightforward real food. Classic café sandwiches with a twist.”
One of the classic sandwiches is the roasted chicken club, made with fresh local Amish chicken breast, roasted and prepared there in the restaurant. It is paired with prosciutto, fresh tomato, lettuce, red onion with a blue cheese pesto mayo. Have this with any of the fresh baked breads made at the restaurant as well.
A good choice would be the vegetable bread that is made with real veggies and fresh herbs and are baked throughout the bread itself. It takes the sandwich to a whole new level, adding one more layer of great flavor.
You could also pair a half sandwich with one of Beezy’s home-style soups. Although many customers love the creamy soups offered at this restaurant, the pinto poblano is a vegan-friendly hit, along with the vegetarian vegetable soup. These soups can please any palette, vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.
The vegetarian vegetable soup is made with just about every simple vegetable you can think of: cabbage, corn and tomatoes just to name a few, all come together with fresh herbs, seasonings, and simmered in a vegetable broth. Very flavorful and delicious, this soup tastes like it has been cooking for hours.
“I enjoyed the food for the first time being here,” said Annette Jackson, first time customer. “The vegetarian vegetable soup just hit the spot, it suited my taste, and it’s very healthy.”
“I liked the service because the woman who works there that took my order was very courteous, polite and friendly—she informed me about the menu and was very patient.”
The staff at this restaurant certainly does add to its home-like and welcoming atmosphere. It is friendly, helpful and most importantly, it possesses a kind of excitement to be a part of the restaurant. When they are excited, it excites the customers about eating the food.
Mayhew appreciates her great staff and has fun working together with them to create great food and a great comfortable atmosphere.
“My original vision was to be a bustling little lunch place where folks of all stripes came together to eat good, honest food along with a great cup of coffee: a place where it was like being at someone’s house where you could sit in the corner and be by yourself, or where you could fire up conversation wherever it caught hold,” Mayhew said.
Beezy’s Restaurant looks to be this exact vision when you walk in. You can bring your laptop and hang out by yourself, or bring your friends. They are open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information and to view the café and catering menu, visit their website at www.beezyscafe.com.
