EMU football team falls short against Ball State Cardinals in 37-26 loss

The football game in Munice, Ind. looked a little bleak at the end of the first quarter with the Ball State Cardinals leading the Eastern Michigan Eagles with a score of 10-0.

With 11:56 on the clock in the second quarter, EMU quarterback Alex Gillett completed a pass to Donald Scott who ran it in for a touchdown. Kody Fulkerson’s extra point was good and that put the Eagles just three points behind BSU. With just 4:37 remaining before halftime, the Eagles were able to score another touchdown, but the extra point was no good.

The Eagles were ahead by three until the Cardinals’ Steven Schott kicked a field goal with three seconds remaining. At halftime, the score was tied up 13-13.

As the Eagles were gaining confidence going into the second half, with 12:31 to go, BSU’s Jahwan Edwards ran 75 yards to get the Cardinals yet another touchdown. BSU then tacked on another touchdown thanks to Horactio Banks with 7:04 remaining on the clock.

The rest of the quarter looked like it was going to be scoreless until Edwards ran in for another touchdown with a mere eight seconds left. BSU now led EMU by 21 points.

As the fourth quarter began, the Cardinals were quick to score more points as a field goal attempt by Schott went through the uprights.

The Eagles replied by scoring a touchdown of their own but their attempt at a two point conversion failed.

With 5:15 left in the game Gillett scored a touchdown for the Eagles and Fulkerson’s extra point was good. The rest of the game remained scoreless and the Cardinals clinched the win with a score of 37-26.

BSU had 36 first downs during the game compared to EMU’s 20. The total yards by the Cardinals tallied in at 596 compared to the Eagles’ 366 yards.

The Cardinals were able to take care of the ball and they easily shut down EMU during the first and the third quarter.

Eastern Michigan hosts Illinois State University next on Sept. 8. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
