Streak broken: Eastern Michigan Women's soccer falls to Miami (Ohio) 3-1

The Eastern Michigan University women’s soccer team saw its historic nine-game unbeaten streak end Thursday afternoon at Scicluna Field, falling 3-1 to Miami University after the Redhawks erupted for two goals in a 40-second span late in the second half.

In an intense Mid-American Conference matchup marked by physical play, both teams struggled early to maintain fluid possession. Disruptions from 29 combined fouls and four yellow cards frequently halted the flow of action, alongside numerous balls kicked out of bounds. Despite the physical pressure, Eastern Michigan worked diligently in the opening minutes to establish its offense, moving the ball into attacking territory through structured passing. One key combination featured a sharp pass from midfielder Tayla Maddock to forward Kaylee Synk, advancing the ball into Miami’s defensive zone as the Eagles tested the Redhawks’ defense.

Miami gradually mounted pressure as the opening half progressed, searching for a breakthrough. Eastern Michigan goalkeeper Ella Holland delivered several critical early saves to keep the Eagles within reach. However, the Redhawks finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the 26th minute when Katie O’Malley found the back of the net off assists from Coltie Carson and Kayla Perfect, giving Miami a 1-0 lead. The physical intensity escalated before the break, with Miami receiving a yellow card as Eastern Michigan faced growing pressure to find an answer before halftime.

Eastern Michigan emerged for the second half with renewed energy, actively pursuing an equalizer. The breakthrough came in the 48th minute when officials awarded the Eagles a penalty kick after a video review. Midfielder Christie Fransen stepped up and calmly converted the attempt, knotting the score at 1-1. The equalizer gave the home side immediate momentum, re-energizing the Eagles as they sought to take control of the contest.

For much of the second half, the match remained deadlocked in a tense stalemate as both teams worked to create scoring chances. Holland continued to protect the net for Eastern Michigan, limiting Miami’s chances while the Eagles pushed forward in search of a go-ahead goal. However, the turning point came abruptly in the 75th minute when Miami’s offense regained the lead as Perfect scored off assists from Maris Jennings and O’Malley, making it 2-1.

Before Eastern Michigan could regroup, Miami earned a penalty kick less than a minute later inside the EMU box. Perfect converted the spot-kick for her second goal of the match, extending the Redhawks' advantage to 3-1 and shifting momentum decisively with roughly 15 minutes remaining.

Despite the rapid two-goal deficit, Eastern Michigan refused to relent in the closing minutes as they pushed to cut into it. Forward Lauren Yaquinto registered two shots on goal, testing Miami goalkeeper Dominique Popa, who made two saves to preserve the victory. In total, Miami held a 10-4 edge in total shots (7-3 on goal) and an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Holland ended the match with three saves for Eastern Michigan.

The defeat marked the first time this season that the Eagles conceded more than one goal in a match. The result also snapped Eastern Michigan’s nine-game unbeaten run, which had tied the program record.

Eastern Michigan will aim to rebound when it hosts Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 15, at Scicluna Field.
