LGBT center hosts annual Pride Prom

“In a high school setting, there’s not a lot of welcome and comfort for somebody to take their same-sex like boyfriend or girlfriend to a high school prom,” Mary Larkin, program coordinator of Eastern Michigan University’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center, said.

Fortunately, EMU, one of the most gay-friendly campuses in the country, provides an active student life and inclusion for students on campus.

One of the most anticipated events here on campus for students of the LGBT community is the annual Pride Prom, which is set to please with a few surprises with its new theme Viva Las Gaygas! on Monday from 8 p.m. to midnight in the Student Center Ballroom. Admission is free, and refreshments will be provided, so come dressed to impress.

Throughout the night there will be live entertainment, poker tables and raffles for prizes. Money from tickets sold will be donated to the Jim Toy Community Center, a LGBT organization in Washtenaw County.

“We don’t have many events that are just fun in the winter semester, so this is really the only time I feel like the community gets together,” Larkin said. “Folks seem to love it. We’ll see that on the Facebook [event] wall with students commenting like that, they think it’s one of the best events of the year.”
