EMU names interim athletic director

Eastern Michigan University announced the appointment of Melody Reifel Werner as the university’s interim athletic director Tuesday.

She officially takes her position April 17 when outgoing Athletic Director Derrick Gragg takes over at the University of Tulsa, as he ushers its transition from Conference USA into the “new” Big East Conference.

Reifel Werner had previously served as associate athletic director and senior woman administrator since 1996, when she was originally hired at EMU.

Reifel Werner earned her bachelor’s (1979), master’s (1988) and doctorate (2006) degrees at EMU.

“I’m excited and honored that President [Susan] Martin has asked me to serve as interim athletics director,” Reifel-Werner said in a press release. “EMU is a place that has meant so much to me and I strongly believe in the foundation we have created. My task, along with our coaches, staff, student-athletes and supporters is to continue the momentum we have established.”

According to the release, a national search will begin soon for a full-time AD. Stay with The Eastern Echo for more news as it becomes available.
