Useful websites every college student should know

With school just around the corner many students are gearing up for the first day of class. While Eastern Michigan University hosts an expansive library right on campus, the internet also offers several key resources that can aid in a successful semester. The following websites can help make sure that you're on the top of your game this academic year.

Rate My Professors

Rate My Professors is a great website for rating a professor on several key factors ranging from difficulty of the course, how tough of a “grader” they are, the coursework load, how much the textbook is used, attendance policy and other criteria. Students can look up professors by name and department with reviewers describing their experience with a specific class. A major fear for most students when signing up for classes is getting stuck with a horrible professor and by using this website students can get a general idea on what to expect before the first day of class.

Prezi

Prezi is a visually appealing presentation service that rivals competitive software such as Microsoft Powerpoint. It's fairly simple to use and can turn a boring slideshow into a visually stunning presentation. To use Prezi students log into an account where they can access and edit their presentations through a storage system on the website. Prezi is free to use through creating a public account, whereas a private account has a monthly subscription fee. Regardless of whether it's free or not, Prezi offers exciting template designs and unique non-linearity that is a nice change of pace compared to Powerpoint.

EasyBib

When it comes to writing essays there are two things that students dread the most: actually writing the essay and creating a works cited list for all of the outside sources referenced in the essay. EasyBib solves one of these problems by automatically generating proper citation by simply plugging in a website URL or book title. Most scholarly journals and studies often list their own works cited information, but for those that don't EasyBib ensures that the reference information is as accurate as possible regardless of the formatting style.

Purdue OWL

While EasyBib does a good job formatting a reference properly, sometimes it's necessary to create works cited references manually rather than through a generator. Purdue OWL outlines in detail all of the rules to follow when citing sources, whether you're following MLA, APA, or Chicago style. Purdue OWL also offers helpful information on grammar rules and other general writing resources.

Amazon Prime Student

Amazon offers students a service called Prime Student, where college students can sign up for a six-month free trial that offers free two-day shipping on eligible orders. Students sign up using a valid .edu e-mail address and verifying a confirmation e-mail sent to that address. Whether purchases are made for school or dorm essentials, Prime Student ensures that no student will lack supplies through prompt delivery.
