Review: Netflix’s ‘The Adam Project’ is a movie you’ll want to make time to watch

This star-studded cast does a great job of making a comedy sci-fi action film hit the mark.

Review: Netflix’s ‘The Adam Project’ is a movie you’ll want to make time to watch

If you identify as a science fiction or comedy nerd, Netflix’s “The Adam Project” may be the movie for you. As a fan of sci-fi films in general, they are definitely hit or miss with the ability to sell you on the sci-fi aspect of the film, but this film does a great job of establishing the characters and plot, as well as the science fiction.

Synopsis

A time-traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed accidentally crash lands in 2022. He must team up with his 12-year-old self to save the future. This film features a star-studded cast with Ryan Reynolds as Adam Reed, Jennifer Garner as Ellie Reed, Mark Ruffalo as Louis Reed, and Zoe Saldaña as Laura Shane.

What I loved

The comedy in this film is sprinkled throughout the movie and used at the perfect times. I don't think there was one instant where I didn't laugh when a joke was made. The humor is definitely standard "Ryan Reynolds" brand, but it is not only used by his character, and that's what makes it have high comedic value. Both Adams’ in this film are witty and clever with the jokes, which makes the film enjoyable to watch.

The plot was fascinating too and something original that I enjoyed. The idea of time travel in movies is not new, but what this film does with it puts a new twist on the time travel trope. It makes time travel different, with new technology and the mechanics of time travel in general. The story overall made me laugh and cry which any good movie should be able to do.

What I didn't love

For a time-traveling movie where the same people are to be in the same place next to each other at the same time requires some movie magic, but the magic falls flat in that aspect. There's CGI used for certain characters and it often looks very robotic and not human at times. If the character is stationary it's not too bad, but once they start moving all bets are off.

For this epic sci-fi action film, the music lacks majorly. During the climax of the film there is this epic battle scene, but the music is a soft lullaby compared to an epic track they could have used. The music throughout this film felt extra soft, and not what I’d expect from a sci-fi action film.

Verdict

Overall, this was one of the best Netflix films I’ve seen in a while. There was this great balance of action, comedy, and drama that made it intriguing to watch. If you are a fan of comedy sci-fi films with a good plot and good characters, this movie is for you.

I give "The Adam Project" a 4.5 out of 5.
