Opinion: An intern's perspective of Global Ties Detroit

In less than a week, I will be receiving a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations. Just short of a month ago, I began interning at Global Ties Detroit, an organization dedicated to international exchange and collaboration. Before entering this internship, I only had a vague idea as to what my degree could accomplish. However, after seeing the impact that Global Ties has had on so many people has encouraged me in my path to working in this field.

As the pandemic transferred most of their in-person programs to a virtual setting, 2022 has acted as a beacon of hope. Next month, Global Ties Detroit will host an in-person exchange for the first time in two years. As a result, a great deal of effort has gone into the planning.

My role as an intern has been to assist in these tasks through locating special events, researching hotels, and creating information guides to make the visitors feel welcomed. Though I’ve only been in my position for three weeks, my time has been extremely valuable as I’ve already learned so much.

Through programs like Young Transatlantic Innovation Leaders Initiative (YTILI) and Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI), Global Ties Detroit has been able to promote the intercultural exchange of ideas and experiences. These programs touch on economic and social development, supporting young entrepreneurs, and creating partnerships.

Though Global Ties is not a new organization, its impact on people's lives has never been more prevalent. Cultural exchange is so important in our ever-changing world, and being able to bring a little bit of that exchange to Detroit is an opportunity I’m proud to be a part of.

During my internship experience, I could not have asked for a better team to work with. Currently, all staff positions are held by three amazing and hardworking women whose hearts and dedication for global exchange is what has allowed them to be as successful as they are. To emphasize this point further, consider that this is an organization based on international travel and they were able to survive and thrive during a global shutdown. Only true passion could’ve done that, which has been amazing to see first-hand.

Moving forward, I hope to continue working with Global Ties Detroit, as they’ve assisted me in my journey so much already. They’ve introduced me to the world of International Relations and I can safely say there’s no turning back now.

Thanks to Global Ties, I’ve learned skills and gained knowledge that I know I will be able to take with me into my future.
