"Five Nights at Freddy’s" is a movie based on the popular franchise started by Scott Cawthon. The games began in 2014 with “Five Nights at Freddy’s” being the original; it was followed with plenty of sequels and spinoffs. It became a worldwide sensation with the games being covered by famous youtubers like Markiplier, and gaining brand recognition throughout the world with merchandise in stores like Hot Topic.
Synopsis
The movie follows a security guard down on his luck with no other options than to work at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. After his first night on the job he realizes this position may be even stranger than he originally thought it would be.
Starring Josh Hutcherson as Mike the security guard, Piper Rubio as Abby, and Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa.
Highs
The animatronics are spectacular. When this film was announced I was very excited to see how they would bring the game to life, and they visually did not disappoint. From the pizzeria to the animatronics, everything looks so realistic it’s hard to tell it's not real.
Lows
The movie is not scary at all. Being created by a film empire like Blumhouse and being called a supernatural horror movie, it failed to reach expectations. Even the simple jumpscares themselves ultimately failed to do the job. In addition, the first hour of the film is wasted on backstory, and it just seems to build anticipation that leads to disappointment. Not to mention when the “scary” animatronics are coming they sound hilarious rather than scary and it really takes the horror out of the film.
Verdict
Film failed to meet prior expectations. Those coming in with no experience in playing the games may enjoy the film but the plot itself doesn't seem to measure up to the visuals the movie brought forth and makes it overall lack interest.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s” gets a 3 out of 10.
