Review: “the rest” is a short and sweet EP

Boygenius surprised fans on Sept. 25 with the announcement of an upcoming EP titled "the rest" on Oct. 13, not long after releasing their debut album earlier this year.

Boygenuis is a supergroup made of singers Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. Their debut album "the record" was met with critical acclaim across the board and has a 98% approval rating on google.

The band, who is currently touring, started playing the songs off the EP at their concerts, until finally the EP came out and all the sounds were released for all to hear. The band simply released the EP without much fanfare saying “the rest is out” on their instagram account.

Highs

The lyrics are soul-crushingly beautiful. This EP feels almost more intimate than their other work because it's all acoustic type production, the listener can hear their thoughts so clearly it’s captivating.

"How we’re stuck in entropy - How it hurts to hope - Oh, it hurts to hope for more - Oh, it hurts to hope the future will be better than before” is a line in "Afraid of Heights" that truly pulls the listeners mind into the song, it's the sorrow of hoping, but you know you have to try.

This EP feels so different from previous boygenius simply in the production style, but the lyrics and emotion still hold true to what you know from them, and that's what pulls you in and makes the EP so enjoyable.

Lows

As in the case of most, this EP is so short. This EP has four songs and is 12 minutes and 6 seconds long. This project can be seen as more of an extension of “the record,” but instead of a deluxe edition, the band chose to make an EP. The songs themselves are great, but the ultimate looping of the album makes it hard to digest.

Verdict

Like this EP, this review is short. If you're a boygenius fan you'll want to add these songs into your sad vibe rotation, or if you like acoustic songs with sad lyrics then you may also like this EP. Beware, you will have played the EP fully 20 times before realizing the shortness.

I give “the rest” a 8 out of 10 rating.
