The Ypsilanti District Library's Michigan Ave. branch closed September 12, 2026, after a patron reported finding a bedbug near the library’s computer bank.
Sam Killian, the community relations coordinator for the Ypsilanti District Library, said in a statement that the report is similar to an incident that previously led to the branch’s closure.
Killian said, "A patron notified us of a bedbug near the computer bank once again, resembling the situation during the previous closure."
The library responded by bringing in trained bedbug-sniffing dogs to inspect the area and determine whether there was additional evidence.
“The dogs are trained to sniff out bed bugs, which can alert you to any areas that need treating,” Killian said.
According to Killian, the dogs did not find evidence of additional bed bugs, meaning the library did not need to conduct further treatment.
The branch reopened Sept. 15, but closed again September 19 for further treatment.
"YDL-Michigan will be closed Saturday, September 19 for a full building bedbug treatment. There have been no new sightings at our branch; we are taking this step as a precaution amidst increased bedbug activity in the area," YDL said in a post on Facebook.
“Bed bugs can get into the library in a lot of different ways,” Killian said. “They love books and other warm places so they can travel in on people’s library materials, clothing, etc."
