The Honors College will host a holiday Swoopla event from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 9 to begin holiday festivities.
Located at the lower level of the Commons, this event will include making snowmen bottle caps and making holiday decor and cards for a local nursing home.
Alyssa Shaw, a graduate assistant and graduate program coordinator at EMU, believes this event is essential for the community at Eastern.
"Part of being in the Honors College program is service, and we feel this helps bring the Honors College together by celebrating all great things this holiday season and how this can impact others this holiday season," Shaw said.
This time of year can be sad to some, especially with holiday traditions spreading cheer and positivity; events such as these are trying to show all of Ypsilanti how the holiday 'Swoopla' can help show everyone how students think about those in need.
"What makes our programming team great is that everyone is brand new this semester, and this was a learning curve for everyone, but seeing all the new faces and drawing on the community showed everyone they had enjoyed working together," Shaw said
As the fall semester nears an end, the Honors College hopes to bring students together by helping fellow EMU faculty, students, and community members.
"We wanted to have an event to close out the semester by playing bingo and just bringing the Honor students together," Riley Coffee, a student programing fellow said.
Shaw agreed with Coffee and believes events like Swoopla will help in bringing the Honors College together as they celebrate a long semester.
"I feel like Honors College has a spot for anyone! It's definitely one I recommend. It's inclusive and full of opportunities," Shaw said.
Students can learn how to become involved with the Honors College or participate in future events by visiting their website and social media.
