Accuweather Heat Advisory

Staying safe during the Midwest's first heat wave of 2025

The National Weather Service issued a regional extreme heat advisory for the Ypsilanti area from Sunday, June 21, until Tuesday, June 24. Heat index temperatures are expected to reach up to 100 F with high humidity.

Individuals in Washtenaw County should take precautionary measures including drinking plenty of fluids, staying indoors whenever possible, and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Washtenaw County has a number of cooling centers available to those in need, including the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti District Libraries. Find more cooling centers and their hours at washtenaw.org.

Weather Amnesty will be in place during the extreme heat advisory, allowing extra space at the Delonis Center. Extra staff will be on site and water will be available.

To stay safe and cool, try these tips from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services:

  • Drink more fluids like water and avoid ones with sugar and alcohol;
  • Limit time outdoors to the early morning and evening;
  • Spend time indoors in air conditioning. If you don't have air conditioning, try one of the cooling centers in Washtenaw County;
  • When outdoors, wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing;
  • Wear sunscreen. Sunburns can affect the body's ability to cool down.

In the event of heat-related illnesses, immediately call 911 and attempt to cool the person down. Signs of heat-related illness, including heatstroke, can vary but include:

  • heavy sweating;
  • muscle cramps;
  • weakness;
  • dizziness;
  • headache;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • fainting;
  • body temperatures above 103 F;
  • tiredness

Stay safe out there and enjoy this summer wisely. Check back with The Eastern Echo for more updates.
