Eagle Sports Tips & Tales: Aug. 24-30

Along with fall semester classes, fall sports on campus are now in full swing.

Here’s a look at the top sports storylines this week at Eastern Michigan University.

Football | Season opener at Texas State – Aug. 30, 2025, 7 p.m.

After a disappointing end to the 2024 season, Eastern Michigan’s football program returns to the gridiron to open the new year aiming for redemption.

Traveling down to San Marcos, Texas, to face non-conference foe Texas State University in their first-ever regular season game in the state, the Eagles look to start 2025 by breaking into the win column for the first time since last October.

A new starting quarterback will headline the Eagles’ return to action, and the 50th anniversary of Mid-American Conference play for the green and white also kicks off Saturday Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

Viewers can catch all the action live on ESPN+.

Volleyball | Season opening tournament – Aug. 29-30, 2025

The Eastern Michigan women’s volleyball program returns to competition this weekend, taking a road trip to Radford, Virginia for three separate matches against the University of Marshall, Radford University, and Kansas City University.

With the Eagles having provided a good showing in their final preseason match against Michigan State University on Aug. 23, the green and white hope to carry that momentum with them on the road and build upon their eight-win improvement from the 2023 to 2024 campaign.

Viewers can catch the Eagles in action all weekend on ESPN+.

Men’s and women’s cross country | Jeff Drenth Memorial – Aug. 29, 2025, 11 a.m.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams compete this weekend for the first time in 2025, racing in the Jeff Drenth Memorial hosted by Central Michigan University.

To kick off the women’s cross country Head Coach Sue Parks' final season at the helm, both squads aim to start their campaigns off on the right foot on Friday, Aug. 29.

The women’s meet begins at 11 a.m. and the men’s event starts at 11:35 a.m.

Soccer | EMU vs. Southern Indiana – Aug. 28, 2025, 1 p.m.

Following back-to-back losses to open their 2025 campaign, the Eastern Michigan women’s soccer team aims to return to the win column with their first road test of the year against the University of Southern Indiana.

The Eagles have yet to score a goal in their first 180 minutes of action this year, but they are fighting to change that statistic on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 1 p.m.
