Eastern Michigan University's Recreation/Intramural Sports Department, or Rec/IM, launched a new fitness class during the fall semester. Called Eagle-X Functional Training, the goal is to help participants improve real-life movement patterns, enhance performance and prevent injury.

The first class met Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, and future classes will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As explained in the class schedule, the functional training class focuses on strength, stability and mobility through full-body movement.

Simultaneously, the Rec/IM launched Eagle-X Group Fitness, which is the new official programming title under which classes are offered. Monday through Friday, the department hosts a variety of free exercise classes for current members. Classes include Learn to Lift, Yoga, Mat Pilates and Total Body Tone. The 16 different class offerings range from 30- to 60-minute intervals.

Morgan Losey, a certified trainer and the coordinator for fitness programs at the Rec/IM, provided more information on the new programming.

Q: What was the intent behind the new fitness program?

A: To provide a welcoming environment for all individuals to participate in creating healthy habits through movement.

Q: Are outdoor classes a possibility for warmer seasons?

A: We currently offer an outdoor walking group, “On Wednesdays We Walk," as well as additional outdoor pop-up fitness classes during the warmer weather. Always check the Rec/IM Instagram and website for outdoor opportunities.

Q: What's the intended average class size or maximum?

A: Class sizes are determined by the fitness studio capacity as well as the activity being performed. All classes are capped at a capacity that will allow participants and instructors to participate in the fitness class safely.

Q: Who is leading these Eagle-X Group Fitness classes?

A: All Eagle-X Instructors are experienced students who hold certifications, are involved in applicable programs of study and/or teach at other studios as well.

Q: Will classes rotate weekdays or remain consistent?

A: Fitness classes remain consistent with the most updated Eagle-X schedule that can always be found on the Rec/IM website.

Q: How does this programming differ from previous programs?

A: Eagle-X Group Fitness is a long-standing program at the Rec/IM. While the name has recently been updated, fitness classes have been offered for many years. What makes Eagle-X stand out is our amazing instructors and our motivation to serve the EMU campus in creating healthy habits.
