Ypsilanti Pride postponed due to dangerous air quality

On the afternoon of Friday, July 17, just one day prior to Ypsi Pride, the event was canceled and rescheduled for Aug. 30, 2026.

Due to smoke from the Canadian wildfires, air quality in the northern United States has been unsafe and even dangerous at times. As of 5 p.m. on Friday, the air quality index in Ypsilanti measured 266, listed as very unhealthy according to IQAir. Thursday around noon the index was as high as 500.

Ypsi Pride was originally scheduled for Saturday, July 18 in Depot Town, but organizers worried about potential health risks and decided to postpone the event.

“We can not, in good faith, put anyone's health at risk while the air quality remains dangerous to everyone. We especially do not want to endanger the help of our entertainers, vendors and volunteers who are asked to be outside for the duration of a day-long celebration of our community and its resilience,” Ypsi Pride organizers said in an Instagram post.

The event will now take place on Sunday, August 30 from noon to 10 p.m. The new date has been appoved by the City of Ypsilanti and all vendors and performers have been invited to the new date.
