After winning their parties' nomination in Michigan's primary election, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and U.S. Rep. John James are set to face off in what is expected to be a highly contested general election in November.
Benson won the Democratic primary over Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson and James has defeated businessman Perry Johnson in the Republican gubernatorial primary, as election workers continue to tally the votes.
Both Benson and James have general election experience for statewide office. Michigan’s status as a perennial purple state could make the margins razor thin for both campaigns.

State legislators
Former State Rep. Felicia Brabec won over Micheal White in the Michigan State Senate District 15 Democratic primary. Incumbent State Rep. Jimmie Wilson Jr. defeated challenger William C. Riney in the Democratic primary for Michigan House District 32.
District 15 includes Ypsilanti in the state Senate and District 32 includes Ypsilanti in the state House of Representatives.
