Town Hall

U-M to host second town hall about proposed data center

On Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, the University of Michigan will host a second town hall about its partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory to build a high-functioning data center in Ypsilanti Township.

The town hall will take place in the ballroom of Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Registration to attend in-person is full, but there is a waitlist available, and the event will be livestreamed on the U-M YouTube channel for those who cannot attend.

The town hall is formatted to be a guided discussion led by U-M officials, followed by a Q&A where audience members will have the opportunity to make comments and ask additional questions.

The data center has received pushback from some community members, who have vocalized their dissent, citing environmental and ethical concerns, as well as criticism of Los Alamos National Laboratory's involvement.

A press conference and protest was scheduled for the first town hall on Sept. 9, but was rescheduled for Oct. 1 due to inclement weather. The protest was organized by a group of community members that oppose the data center. The protest is expected to start at 3 p.m. by the Marriott entrance sign.

Ypsilanti Marriott at Eagle Crest is located at 1275 S. Huron St. in Ypsilanti Township. A livestream recording of the Sept. 9 town hall is available on the University of Michigan YouTube channel.
