EMU Center for Jewish Studies, Zingerman's Roadhouse to host author Nora Rubel for 'Cooking Up History' event

The Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies is collaborating with Zingerman’s Roadhouse on Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2026, for an event connecting history, food and culture.

The event, titled "Cooking Up History: Nora Rubel on the Settlement Cook Book," explores different kinds of food, history and Jewish American culture. This event will feature guest Nora Rubel, professor at the University of Rochester and the author of the newly released book "Recipes for the Melting Pot: The Lives of the Settlement Cook Book."

Rubel’s past work investigates the vast historical and cultural impact of the 1901 "Settlement Cook Book," which was originally organized in Milwaukee during the 19th century as a guiding tool, helping the immigrant populations navigate American lifestyle.

This event will feature an interactive talk led by Zingerman’s co-founder, Ari Weinzweig, and will feature unique appetizers created directly from Rubel's book.

Admission for the event is $45. Advanced registration is required due to seating at the Roadhouse being limited.

Those interested can find more information on the event page on the Zingerman's Roadhouse website.
