Downing Hall Move-in

EMU opens break housing to all residence halls, application due Oct. 15

Students who live on Eastern Michigan University's campus can either stay in their dorms or return home during the fall break, Oct. 19-25.

Students who plan to stay on campus for some or all of the break must sign up for fall break housing. Directions on how to sign up can be found on the Housing and Residence Life website under the Break Housing tab. Students will be directed to the Housing Portal.

The fall break housing application opened Monday, Oct. 5 and closes Thursday, Oct. 15 at noon.

MaryAnne Wilk, assistant director of residential life, sent an email to The Echo about housing over the fall break.

"All residence halls and apartments are open for fall break," Wilk wrote. "In addition, all halls and apartments are open during Thanksgiving, semester break and spring break. Residents will need to sign up for break access which the sign up is emailed to them ahead of each break period. This is a safety measure to know who is in the buildings during the break period."

This is the first time all residence housing has remained open for fall break. In the past, select buildings closed over break and all students would be required to go home.

Wilk added that all front desks are open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a resident advisor is on duty 24 hours a day.

Housing and Residence Life staff will enter students' living places for a routine health and safety inspection Friday, Oct. 16. These inspections will be visual and non-invasive, meaning, staff will not open drawers or closets. Housing and Residence Life staff are going to be checking for electrical cord safety, smoke detectors, sprinkler heads, fire extinguishers, windows and overall cleanliness. Additionally, staff will look for prohibited items, such as candles, unauthorized appliances and alcohol containers.

Students are encouraged to view the Guide to Campus Living.

Policy violations will be documented and referred to the Office of Community Standards and/or Public Safety.

Housing staff recommends that students who are leaving their dorms over the break do the following:

  • Discard all perishable food
  • Remove all trash
  • Close and lock all windows
  • Take medications, ID, and other important items
  • Secure their EID and room key for return
  • Turn off the lights and lock room/bedroom doors

For questions, students are advised to contact their Complex Director.
