Jimmie Wilson Jr. (Democrat)
Jimmie Wilson Jr. is a Democrat currently representing District 32 in the Michigan House of Representatives. Wilson is running for reelection this November.
Before working in politics, Wilson attended Universal Technical Institute, formerly known Michigan Institute of Aviation and Technology, where he became a licensed aircraft mechanic. After graduating from UTI, he went on to work for Siemens Energy and later at the Ford Motor Company Rawsonville Plant. Wilson was elected to be a trustee for the UAW Local 898.
Wilson began his career in politics in 2016 when he ran for and was elected to the Ypsilanti Township Board of Trustees and was reelected in 2020. Wilson then ran for state House of Representatives and has held his position since 2022.
Wilson's campaign focuses on eight main issues: housing is a human right, education, healthcare and mental healthcare, real public safety and criminal justice reforms, environmental justice, workers' rights and unions, civil rights for everyone and economic development.
Wilson hopes to expand access to homeownership and create a more equitable and stable rental housing market. He wants to increase funding for K-12 schools so that they can hire more social workers and provide better pay for teacher, bus drivers and other support staff. He wants to add more technical and skilled trade programs into curriculum.
Wilson promises to protect reproductive healthcare as healthcare covered under insurance, lower prescription drug costs and make mental health care more accessible. He hopes to hold law enforcement accountable by ensuring they work collaboratively, transparently and fairly within the community. He wants to enforce universal background checks for firearm owners and reform Michigan's criminal justice system. He hopes to raise minimum wage, which he says will make it easier to attract well-paying jobs to the area and allow workers to join unions.
