According to the American Lung
Association, “smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death
worldwide.” Not only does smoking and tobacco use affect those using it, but
the results from secondhand smoke are just as bad. The American Lung Association
also claims that secondhand smoke causes more than 41,000 deaths each year.

Every day I see it more and more frequently, students walking around or standing outside classes puffing away, not on traditional cigarettes, but on electronic cigarettes. Some even smoke them inside buildings while walking to class. This alternative to traditional cigarettes has been around for the past few years, but is just now beginning to gain popularity, especially among young people. However, little is known about the potential negative side-effects of this new craze and it worries me.

Chris Kyle was the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history with over 160 confirmed kills. He was honorably discharged from the military in 2009 and went on to write an autobiography about his experiences. Most people know him though from the recent film, American Sniper, which came out in December of 2014. The movie explores the life as a Navy Seal which Chris Kyle lived.

Monday, March 23, there was a disturbance near the Tower dorms here at Eastern Michigan. Lauren Stewart, a junior apparel and textile merchandising major and resident of Hill Hall, was woken up early Monday morning.

The Board of Regents recently approved a four percent increase in on-campus housing rates and a five percent increase for meal plans. The money generated by the increase will go toward renovations of on-campus housing and cover the increasing cost of food. While I do understand that up keeping facilities is an important part of running a university, I cannot help being skeptical of the increase.

Last year at this time we were buried in a foot of snow all huddled in our houses trying to stay out of the frigid 40-degrees-below-zero temperatures. Classes were cancelled and the only thing left to do was cuddle under a blanket and try and stay warm. This year isn’t much better with the temperature still falling below ten degrees. The only difference is it’s just warm enough to still having to go outside.
