In 2002, the short-lived MTV sketch-comedy show “Scratch and Burn” made a music video called “When the Geeks will Rule the World,” a song of hope for electronics geeks who were made fun of in high school. It is hard to say if geeks rule the world in 2010, but electronics rule America, and the Geek Squad understands electronics.

“Cellar Roots” and “Body Electric” are two literary magazines run by Eastern Michigan University students. “Body Electric’s” deadline has already passed; their Vol. 6 will be out on Saturday, Dec. 10. “Cellar Roots” is currently taking submissions for poetry, short story and visual art until Saturday, Dec. 27. Neither literary magazine has a theme this year.

The Eastern Michigan University community listened in rapt silence as Dr. MeeAe Nam, a voice professor at EMU, talked about how Korea was under Japanese rule for 35 years (1910-1945). During that time, no freedom of speech in music or art that represented Korean pride was allowed. When the Japanese found out the song, “The Balsam,” was a metaphor for loss of Korean identity under Japanese rule, the composer came out of prison bloody.

There will be a free showing of “Regina Spektor: Live in London” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Student Center Auditorium. The Blu-ray will feature 18 of Spektor’s performances, from London’s Hammersmith Apollo Theater. It will be the first time fans can see Spektor perform at an uncomfortably close distance, as well as see footage of intimate details like sound check and peeks inside backstage.

“The Amazing Race” premiered Sept. 25 to millions of viewers eager to see how drama unfolds for a diverse roster of characters. Eleven teams must race around the world completing challenges and navigating across cultures, with the slowest teams getting eliminated. The last team remaining gets $1 million.

The Wellness Center at Snow Health Center has displayed a large black panel advocating the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Posted on the panel are resource brochures and tips for a consistent night’s sleep.
One piece of information missing is learning how to balance sleep with the rollercoaster of being a college student.

People shivering in their T-shirts waited excitedly on top of Sherzer Hall’s roof Thursday to see the Iridium Flare, which was unexpectedly announced. With silence, about 16 Eastern Michigan University students looked to the clear night sky around 8 p.m. to see what looked like a big bright star gradually appear and then fade away. It lasted about three seconds.

For the homecoming season at Eastern Michigan University, most candidates campaigned in Spirit Stations, on Facebook, with posters and by word-of-mouth to get elected for the crown. Candidate Muneeb Khan, a man, campaigned to not be disqualified from running for homecoming queen.

The sounds of lively music played by Korin Hancherlian-Amos is what made Patricia Fitzsimmons, 62, stop to park her car in Depot Town on Sept. 25. She listened in rapt silence as Amos finished her song on a white Steinway piano with “Play Me” hand-painted on the front. When the song was over, both women, complete strangers to each other, entered Nelson Amos Studio, talking like old friends.

In the New York Times article “Recession Raises Poverty Rate to a 15-Year High” economist Lawrence Katz of Harvard observed that this is the first time an entire decade has produced no economic growth for the American household. With one in seven American residents struggling below the poverty line, there seems to be little hope for career advancement or a career at all.

A senior thesis is like a root canal; no one thinks about it until they need one for themselves. Ben Crumm, 21-year-old honors student at Eastern Michigan University is different. He knew he wanted to do a thesis on his cross-country trip around America before he wanted to go to EMU.

Despite the storm clouds cast by the Julea Ward case, the LGBT community at Eastern Michigan University continues to vibrantly show its rainbow colors with the same planned events and hopeful attitude for the 2010 school year. One instance was Welcome Back BBQueer at Big Bob’s Lake House last Tuesday. The free cookout was the LGBT Resource Center’s kick off where members of the LGBT community reunited after months apart and learned of upcoming LGBT events.

With fall classes starting, students will be too busy focusing on new school schedules, work schedules and life schedules. Well-intended resolutions will be unacknowledged, only to be renewed four months from now, at the height of New Years 2011.

This summer, from June 24-July 29, Eastern Michigan University students traveled to Europe for EMU’s Mediterranean Cultural History Tour where they took history classes in ancient ruins like the Colosseum in Rome and art classes at the Duomo in Florence.
